The Road Runner
In real life this is a comical fellow, sort of strange Most know him from the cartoons, tricking the old coyote More to our feathered friend, after a victory then the usual "beep beep" As he goes at lighting speed across the range Running like it is his last run and that is all she wrote One might think that he runs in his sleep Black, white with some gray, cocky little head with a needle like beak Long tail feathers, a lot like a weather vane As he rip roars across the desert floor Not much meat on his bone, stream lined and sleek Curious, playful, but he can entertain Always on the run. flying to him is a chore The female will build a nest, for the on coming young It is the ugliest thing you have ever seen, but for defense She will hide them inside Rattle snakes love them, they hunt for them when spring has sprung The nest if sticks is better than a barb wire fence Then off to hunting again and a wild ride When a predator is near, they will take to flight Just a short distance, for a speedy escape Then hit the ground running, that is how they got their name Very seldom see them in a tight Or stick around if there is a scrape Running along, just like life is a game
