Consider the Lilies
I cherish the reassuring presence of my six-petaled friend, Star-like head on an impossibly thin stem Your fluted trump turned towards the sun. Paler than your more vibrant cousins Against the darkness of your surroundings, You have been a constant support During a week of difficult days. Despite your evident fragility, Your searching after light Inspires in me my own quest For all that is true and beautiful. Drawing deep from the water beneath you You have summoned strength to stand As a bright witness to your Creator. Too soon your destined time will be o'er, So I celebrate the short time in your company Knowing that before long you will fade, wither And die. Returning to the ground which gave you life To store the energy you will need To burst into life Again Next Spring.
