Do You Know...
Do you know, baby, I am not even angry with you; I don’t even feel the slightest trace of resentment No burden of hatred sits heavy on my heart – Even though you violated me, In your subtle but predictable way, And even though you snapped my heart like a twig And then ground it to dust beneath your polished shoes – Even though you left me weeping hollow tears; Even though I am dying a slow death, suffering… Still I find the strength to love you And despite the winter snows that fall inside my soul, Blanketing my mind with dismal white, Your name and the memory of your face shine out, Bright and blazing as the fires of happy homes – And when I whisper your name into the empty night… Oh god, the specter of your beauty looms, Ethereal, out of the gathering gloom – And I find myself prostrate at your phantom feet Crying, and pleading, and wishing you would come back to me Just for one more hour, one more precious minute So I can gorge myself on your angelic grace – And for a short while forget the world’s ugly, murderous face…
