Hearts
I assumed that the heartless ones would win. So when you dealt me no hearts for my first hand I was elated. I thought I had the game in the bag. I could barely contain my enthusiasm. (I don't play poker either.) But I did get some high cards And the queen of spades. (What a bitch she can be!) The other players put out their lowest cards, Which was cruel to me Because I kept taking heart, after heart, after heart, Until I was full of feelings And I still held the queen. "Full of hearts yet disheartened? Awful game, this." What I did not realize And you explained to me later Is that if you can take all the hearts, And keep hold of the queen You shoot the moon. So I held on And put everyone else out. And I found myself over the moon Without you. You called it beginners luck -- But, still, it felt like victory.
