Black Pearl
"Black Pearl" I was told, I was like a grain of sand that found its way in my mother’s ocean to a strange home, where there within, I found an open place, self contained and safe for a while, like a cool mollusc provides a soft warm bed; I slept for eternity it would seem, but in the scheme of things, it was a planned short duration; I fed off her to become a pearl luminous, but my true colours not anticipated. I was formed from two worlds in the time of the lost one world, before I became the pearl the two kingdoms spoke of; I had a tail and scales, eventually I shed them. I am the best and worst of each the other, says my mother. my mother, of course, bless her s…, (well, that word of course is forbidden now in our new world - science fiction they say, does not exist, has no place in the time of purity, honest validation); I digress - my mother, of course, conveys to subjects far below and not that far above, I am the best out of all - out of all the warring others. my grandfather said, finding "good" in that one - is like finding a diamond in a sea of mud. He said that well before he successfully transferred to the far away, a different dimension, which my mother confides, like its our little secret, is apparently everywhere, all around us, not above, certainly not below. We just can't see it. my mother says, we sometimes, feel it. She says, they call it New Covenant. Of course, when my grandfather spoke so eloquently of prospecting for diamonds in mud - I am led to believe, he was not referring to me, as I was still a consideration. He was, I guess, referring to all the warring others. But I think, perhaps just the one, out of all the warring others. I am half draconian with the blood of arachnid; the poison is a blessing, sometimes the venom comes in useful in time of fierce battle, when I'm venting, but it is also a curse. Because, you see, I am also of the Fey, and I look very much like the Fey, it is the armour I walk around in; my vessel, some will say. They say, venom is not of the Fey, but I beg to differ, call it truth borne from experience. some call us angels. we are alien to most. to my mother, I am the best out of all the warring others; I am Love and I am Loved. when I was a child she sang me strange lullabies, blue is the colour of Fey, in gold light they arrive if I’m good, if I close my eyes and go to sleep, they come to visit me, the song goes, sometimes they're silver and ultraviolet, but never of dark hue. inside me, I think, I shine a different light. Perhaps I am all the colours in a kaleidoscope. No matter, My mother says, I am Love and I am Loved. scare the world be exactly who you say you are, and tell the truth, she says. she says, I am her beautiful monster. I am Love and I am Loved. inside me, I think, I shine a different light. (LadyLabyrinth / 2022)
