The Mayor of Soup Creek
The sun rose in the east creating a bright orange hue Tom lay in his bunk thinking, can it really be true? The good townsfolk had agreed Tom was a key player And decided that Soup Creek needed him as the mayor. The swearing in ceremony was due to take place at noon And what better place to hold it than the town saloon The townsfolk all turned out immaculately dressed All dolled up to the nines in their Sunday best. At the stroke of noon the preacher, tolled the church bell The townsfolk were jubilant, and by their smiles you could tell Gambler Milton stood up to start the proceedings And said "today Soup Creek town enters new beginnings" Tom placed his hand on the bible and recited the solemn oath Promised to serve Soup Creek as mayor and undertaker, both Then Sheriff Koplin stood up to swear in a new deputy And said "Michael Tor please step forward and stand before me" Michael too recited an oath promising to do his best Then Sheriff Koplin said a few words and pinned a star on his chest It had been a joyful joint ceremony everyone was in a good mood Then Jenna shouted out " okay folks, who'd like some food?" There was cheers as Tania and Jan went to the kitchen at the rear And came back with plates of food and large jugs of beer The celebrations continued late into the night Then someone let off Chinese firecrackers, a colourful sight. The day had been a great success and everyone was happy But Sheriff Koplin was anxious and felt a bit uneasy Then David the Texas ranger walked over to him and said "Prospector Pete just rode in and told me there could be trouble up ahead" He added "as Pete crossed the canyon he noticed a cloud of dust And noticed three heavily armed men, the sort you wouldn't trust It could be nothing, they could just be passing through" Sheriff Koplin said "If they come causing trouble, its a day that they'll rue. The townsfolk were heading home now, some the worse for wear Many were muttering," I'm never drinking again I swear " Then Jenna came out of the saloon winchester in hand And vowed if trouble reared it's ugly head she'd make a stand. It wasn't until six hours later, just after sunrise That the three strangers rode in that came as no surprise Sheriff Koplin approached them to engage them in talk And from the roof of the saloon Jenna, was watching like a hawk.
