Before
Alone for the first time Since the labour wards Beckoned my name 'Take a bath' they said This will help To calm the pain For a an hour or so I had recaptured my body Away from strangers eyes to see In that wonderful time It was just the two of us again You and me The big mirror to my left Seemed to urge me to take a look I saw a swelling belly perhaps for the last time Nervous and scared Lovingly I patted you 'Tomorrow your tiny hand will be in mine' I wondered what lay ahead Would the night be long Would my own Mother's words be true When at last you were born The pain would be forgotten As soon as I looked at you By now, it would have begun Curled in your warm surroundings Feeling comforted by my heart The effects would have taken place Your journey to life The first time we would be apart How your little body Would scramble and shift Unhappy to be moved from where you lay Though you kick Try to fend it off Life is coming, its showing you the way I wanted to savour the moment To be alone with you Before the journey took us both by surprise I just couldn't believe This time tomorrow I would say 'She has my eyes'....
