Brace For Impact
We were off, off for a much needed vacation. Laughter and music filled he car, as the miles just seemed to disappear. The weather was turning gloomy, it was getting much cooler. Sleet and snow now was starting, the ground was looking like it had been sprinkled with powered sugar. The tires could feel the slippy payment, traffic was getting heavier. The radio said a storm was coming, get off the highways. We could not get off, our hotel was still a long way off. As I looked far ahead, all I could see were red lights. I thought~what could that be, Oh no~ it was a sea of bright red brake lights, That means they are slowing down or are stopped, was I going to need to stop but where. We were all driving way too fast to stop, accident flashed before me. I only had a few seconds to decide what to do. I was in the left lane, I saw a flat grass area coming up. Should I ease off the payment and onto the grass, would I spin out. I grabbed the wheel tight, I Braced For The Impact. Then went for it, off onto the grass we went. The kids in the backseat were asleep, until they hit the floor. My husband awoke as I was heading for the grass, thinking I was sleeping he started yelling. I then saw the cars in back of me, following me down the snowy grass. They knew what I knew, we could not stop on the highway. Down the snowy grass I finally stopped, I had taken many cars to safety. What a way to start our vacation, the ride home was uneventful. Date Written: 5/30/2022 4 Place Brace For Impact This or That, Vol 12 Poetry Contest Sponsored by: Edward Ibeh
