The Devils Lament
Call me by name, And don't be ashamed it wasn't I who had sold the world I merely proclaimed, The mistakes that were made For that, heaven, I was cast out Our father, it seems, Has no patience for me And when I was asked to bow To you of all things, such an unworthy being, Of the love that had been bestowed So I rebelled, call it what you will And from hell compelled to come out To prove he was wrong, and man doesn't belong even you, by now, have your doubts I offered knowledge, you took, yet I was the crook It was you who ate from the tree He punished us all, Yet I took the fall But at least his mistake had been seen he then washed his hands, when he flooded the lands But still, couldn't admit nor concede And I at a loss, with his son on a cross, He forgave you! but for me felt no need So why is it I, who is said to have lied? When all that I did was question It was you who deceived and disgraced in his name And proved my earliest contention So now I will try, time after time Until, for our father, there is no doubt That I am the one, who's praise should be sung And from heaven, you'll be thrown out
