A Better World
Nostalgia setting in as I look back Nothing seems worthwhile any more Once we seemed to be on the right track Does a better world lie in store. We had moral standards on TV The National Anthem every night A love for neighbors you could feel and see Parents taught kids wrong from right There was a hospitalized list in the paper at night Neighbors would visit after work each day Friends were friends even after a fight No apologies needed, nothing to say School dances packed, all would attend Fan buses for all the away games Walk home late at night with a friend Shop owners knew everyone by their names People had credit at the grocery store When payday came they paid their bill Sandlot football until our bodies were sore Game in the mud was a real thrill TV was black and white, so were the laws Needed to tune it to get the picture just right James Dean was a rebel without a cause Front and back doors stayed open all night Back porch picnic with a half on tap Soda for the kids and plenty of food Progress now looks like an evil trap Materialism has set the mood Was a better world built as the years passed by Where we gained did we lose as much Do we look at it all and just wonder why Gaining status but losing that human touch A world void of love except for what you can gain Where envy and geed overtake the power of love Do we just accept the heartache and pain Or do we turn back to our God up above Until we go back to the values we knew And remove the seeds we’ve sown Stopping the damage that we still do A better world will never be known
