Were I Just a Wee Bit Smarter
Denny’s got an older sister...gorgeous head to toe...living down in Albuquerque… married...couple kids... Owns a chain of hair salons, makin’ mega-bucks, an’ when I stop to think about my didn’ts and my dids, Having hung around with her for all my senior year...how I could have been so dumb and let her get away Absolutely baffles me...and I can’t help but wonder...were I just a wee bit smarter… where I’d be today. Grandpa Jake had cautioned me, “Connie’s awfully pretty, and someone’s gonna come along and - like the fool you’re bein’ - You’ll find out the hard way, son, ain’t no way in Hades, you’re the only guy in town that little filly’s seein’! Turned out Grandpa Jake was right. After graduation, I called Connie two, three times, thinkin’ we’d go out, Just to learn that - like he’d warned me - those who hesitate far too often learn what - ‘missin’ the boat’ - is all about! Another stupid thing I did was waste my education! Having taken science classes, figuring, like my dad, I’d enroll in junior college, majoring in a trade rife with opportunity, thinking once I had - Like my dad - I could snag most any gal I tried...then manufacture two, three kids, at least, the first few years, But...here I sit...in Rowdy’s Bar...instead of sipping wine...tryin’ to find a - ‘Connie-type’- an’ shootin’ pool for beers! And somethin’ else I shouldn’t have done that boogered up my life was handin’ pret’ near all I had to Lucky Baxter’s broker, ‘Specially after Grandpa’d told me, “...messin’ around with stocks, was,” in his opinion, “even worse than playin’ poker, “‘Specially when the broker is a dude who’s - been in prison”...which left me pret’ near every month with bills I couldn’t pay! These are just a few examples causing me to speculate...were I just a wee bit smarter…where I’d be today!
