2021 - the Centennial of - 'Wonder Bread'
On the 100th anniversary (2021) of the introduction of Wonder Bread to the American consumer, I felt it was worth a little tribute piece to my favorite bread. BTW - Wonder Bread was the first mass produced bread to be offered in 'sliced' loaves! (1930) Unfortunately, this ad is awfully blurry, but the poem is wonderfully "of the period" - 1921. Alexander Taggart, who, together with his folks, immigrated back when folks from Europe came in droves, Opened up a bakery in the town of Indianapolis with one old showcase, a register, and three wood-burning stoves! Cycling what he baked to hit the shelves at: early morn - just before the noon hour - and from five to six P.M., He quickly learned the - freshest bread - was what his patrons wanted, and realized the reason they so often came to him, Rather than the other bakers, lay in his discovering that, even though the others used identical yeast and flour, Folks would walk - or ride - or drive as much as several blocks to buy themselves a loaf that has been - baked within the hour! Starting out in 1921, he named his product - “Wonder Bread” - and as you likely know, the slogan stuck, And only four years later he was selling so much bread to restaurants and delis Alex bought himself a truck! Unfortunately, late this morning, (August, 2021)...to save a little cash I bought a cheaper brand instead, And paid for my frugality by learning - as you’ve guessed - that nothing beats what still today is known as - “Wonder Bread”!
