They became lines of moving bubbles and ascended Like watery snakes looking for their surface goal And hissing as they failed to find it in shoals. Now they’ll rise ever more frequently, ever faster - The rate is chosen by the experiment master. The slight hisses become rumbles Kettle rattle loudens as your gas flame tumbles. Space above water level fills with steam - The boiling makes scientist-eyes gleam. A whistle treble starts to tremble Then, gaining courage, it will soon resemble The olden-days police summons pitch Of ultra-high G or A-sharp, very rich. I should stop now before I have trouble with the law Of physics – for the water boiled away as we saw: And the kettle dried out. The experiment was over, we had left no doubt.
