I Totally Hate Bess's Guts
Me an’ the chick in my dream were still kissing when Mother yelled, “Mark, it’s stopped snowing! It looks like a couple of inches at least, so you’d better get up an’ get going!” Well...I was the image of health as a kid, so - to me - its depth mattered not. I’d learned that the deeper - and wetter it was – the bigger and stronger I got! Nothin’ like shovelin’ for buildin’ up muscles, which girls believe - makes ya’ look cool - And I was the strongest...and close to the fastest...eighteen-year-old athlete in school. But the fact of the matter is...one of my classmates...one I was keen to impress... An auburn-haired beauty with shiny green eyes, whose name, incidentally, was “Bess”, Sat - twice a day - just a few desks away in our classes of - History and Science - But every attempt that I made to engage her...was met with a bristly defiance! Looks of disdain were all I would get in exchange when I’d go for a smile! Why would a girl - I kept asking myself - respond in a manner so vile? What had I done that would cause her to treat me like someone she seemingly hated? And how in the hell do you...“fall out of love”...with someone you’ve not even dated? Of course I resented her treating me so, and determined to figure out why, I turned to my sister...who’d made her acquaintance...and literally begged her to try To bring up the subject - covertly, of course - without actually referencing me Of what kinds of guys she preferred...then inform me...of what sort o’ guy that would be. After I’d paid - in advance - for her service...she infiltrated Bess’s domain, Casually probing to learn what it was that would merit such utter disdain For someone who’d merely requested a smile...that “someone” being me, as you know. But you’d understand...if you ever saw Bess...just why it is that I shelled out the dough! After a series of subtle inquiries...she’d managed to fin’ly uncover the cause... And, sadly - for me - she’d determined - for Bess - that the worst of my multiple flaws Was being - a “jock”! Being an athlete! And she knows I’m addicted to sports, So it looks like I’ll never be gettin’ that smile...nor gettin’, as they say…in her shorts! And FYI: I plan to post many of my AUDIO files over the next few months, most from my 4 new AUDIO-CDs, along with many more text files from my several books of verse. (Only a few CDs and books left - 2-14-21). Because, as with most poets, it simply depends on the mood I’m in at writing time, my pieces vary greatly, from lightheartedly comical to meaningfully poignant, and even a few slightly irreverent works. If you happen to enjoy contemporary “traditional verse” - and my personal style, and appreciate great variety, please visit my website’s at: WWW,WRITEROFBOOKS.COM --- or Google me...after 58 years of penning verse and authoring books, I’m easy to reach!
