Started innocently, with carefree laughter One moment strangers but friends thereafter. Slowly, I began to rely upon you. Seeking an understanding heart, I hurried onward. Once... no, never once did I stop to ponder. Something was changing between us two. So, without recognizing I became someone worth ridicule. One person alone could tell me I was wanted, beautiful... wonderful. Smart? ... No. Not that. For I dove into this hell. Shuddering, I wonder who I have become - One so reliant and desperate, I did succumb. Silent tears fall as the past does swell. Shame for forgetting no one person can fulfill me, Only from the inside, from the Lord, can I be free. So, no more! I try to shake off your chain. Somehow I submit again, for I am weak and you are a known evil. One that I cannot dare to leave without life upheaval. Shall I forever be held captive? Always under your reign? Should I carve you out of my life, although you are always above? Out of my dreams? My hopes? My love? Somehow I know it doesn’t matter, for freedom I cannot attain. Sometimes we think this love is good enough for us, whom we despise. Once here, however, we realize: Shattering who we are brings only pain. 22 July 2020 Written for STRAND completely new (12) any theme any form Poetry Contest Sponsored by Brian Strand
