A Phone On Christmas
From my window ledge out in the garden, tendrils of pea plants and spruce twigs shiver in the spray of snow. The once green foliage is all tainted white like granny’s hair, and Mommy says it is Christmas! She is busy at the oven for some bakes and daddy is fiddling with the flashing lights on the holy tree. Is it also “kishmash” there in Africa? Do you have red and white ribbons in your hair and a red dress to match? Hello. Mommy says it is ”kishmash” too but there is no snow to show. Rain is splattering, and with dad they have gone to the field to sow. Our priest gave us Christmas presents a day before which mom is yet to show me. Last year I wished for a dress and ribbons to match but a got a doll instead! Can one choose a present from their well-wishers? Well, I wish I could. If not, I will dress my doll as smart as I can and dance with it outside in the mud like me dressed for Christmas. Is it all you have and do on Christmas? Yes, if ever it comes along, but more often we miss it so, especially when it rains or there is war. Do you like . . . I feel like crying! Don’t cry my friend, someday God will make things right and make us have “kishmash” as much as you have it over there. Goodbye my friend. Have a Merry Christmas.
