December Farewell
What made me look down then, I'll never know as with my shopping bags I crossed the street, movement caught my attention down below- a bumble bee was moving by my feet, slowly and painfully it did progress where to, who knows, since round me I could see only autumnal browns the leaves now less, no blossoms, pollen, nectar for this bee. A breath of pity rose within my heart, I could not turn a blind eye and walk past, so with a bus ticket and credit card I scooped it up and took it to some grass. If these hours were its last, the work now done to pollinate new life we're grateful for, the least that I could do, its race now run was save it being trampled on the floor. Next day I looked where I had seen it last, it lay inches away upon some dirt where it had took its last steps from the grass and given up the ghost, to lie inert. We two made a sad vignette beneath the gloom, but Spring will come, more bees will fill the skies, their gentle buzzing teasing from the blooms and lazy, gentle flight delights our eyes
