Panning for Floating Gold

Dawn blazed gold, as my quest for gold began.
I saw flickers of gold, twirl around the pan.
Flashing between, the pebbles and sand.
But then they arose, floating out of my hand.

Sunflowers flashed golden smiles to the sun.
But bowed their heads when dusk was done.
For the glitter of gold, needs light to shine.
Fading to rust and orange, in dark's decline.

Oh, gold that dazzles, then fades away,
You lure the heart, then turn to clay.
I gave you my soul, to dig your seams —
But all you gave me, was fools gold's dreams.

Leaves fell red and gold at autumn’s bend,
Sighed of warmth that would never end.
Alas their golden flames sputtered and died,
As winter brushed my red-rosy cheeks aside.

I spied a glint of gold in Lion’s eyes.
Tried to snatch it, while the prize defies,
The risk that lurks in plain sight,
In luring gold, swathed with claw and bite.

It's not by lying, gold deceives its hunters,
It seems too true, just there, in wonders.
Gleaming in nuggets, for easy pickings,
When clawing for dreams in shallow diggings.

Oh, gold that dazzles, then fades away,
You lure the heart, then turn to clay.
I gave you my soul, to dig your seams —
But all you gave me, was fools gold's dreams.
