Silent Equality

It is not possible to say more than it is possible.
Ambition kills value; if unjustified it will
Eat its own life,
Kill someone else's desire to fly,
Cut their wings, suck their air.
Get out, but don't cause unneeded accidents;
There is only as much space, only as much time,
Only as much desire, only as many words,
Only as many pages, only as much ink
To accept all of us at light-speed
Hurrying into the Promised Land
Of oblivion that is waiting for us sooner or later.
No reason for a feverish rush
For we will all arrive in the same place
At the right time. Justice will be served.
There will be no better or worse,
No big and small, no rewards, no punishment,
No guilt, no judges, no hierarchies;
Only silent equality.

Sonnet LXXXV

SONNET LXXXV.

Tennemi Amor anni ventuno ardendo.

HE CONFESSES AND REGRETS HIS SINS, AND PRAYS GOD TO SAVE HIM FROM ETERNAL DEATH.

Love held me one and twenty years enchain'd,His flame was joy—for hope was in my grief!For ten more years I wept without relief,When Laura with my heart, to heaven attain'd.Now weary grown, my life I had arraign'dThat in its error, check'd (to my belief)Blest virtue's seeds—now, in my yellow leaf,I grieve the misspent years, existence stain'd.Alas! it might have sought a brighter goal,In flying troublous thoughts, and winning peace;O Father! I repentant seek thy throne:Thou, in this temple hast enshrined my soul,Oh, bless me yet, and grant its safe release!Unjustified—my sin I humbly own.
Wollaston.
