witch on the payroll

We have a witch on the payroll the police chief said. She scares and intimidates me, fills me with dread. Why do we pay for that? I asked, is there better use of my money? Perhaps said the chief, but although she is never sunny…. She has cracked some murder cases none of us could figure out. She brings her familiar, a black cat named “gad-a-bout”. Together they are a formidable pair, but one thing I guess. They both terrify me, I have to admit and confess.
