Poem written for "What of a Pearl" poetry contest Craig Cornish, sponsor 5/19/2024 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I remember the necklace rested lightly across my chest. Each pearl, dime-sized, shimmered in the incandescent light. I ran my fingers along the gold clasp, delicate flowers holding the strand in place. For a second the mirror deceived me; the face in the reflection was my mother's. I watched as her eyes filled with stars. She lifted the smooth beads from their velvet lined box. They encircled her graceful neck, enhancing her effortless beauty. Then her reflection was gone. I looked at myself in that mirror and instantly felt foolish, for wearing a necklace made from uncomfortable grains of sand inside the mouths of shellfish and for unintentionally getting carried away with the tide.

"Each pearl, dime-sized, shimmered in the incandescent light." I can imagine how beautiful this necklace is. I guess you got it as a heirloom from your mother. I have a similar pearl necklace closely similar to the one shown in the picture. But I don't think it is made of original pearls taken from the shells of pearl oysters. This is a smart entry for the contest. All the Best, dear Sara!

you're right, Valsa, the necklace is a family heirloom. Pearls were so fashionable 'back in the day.' Not sure how my grandmother came by real pearls...never thought to ask either her or my mom. Thanks for your encouragement & have a pleasant day, hugs, Sara

A lovely gift passed from mother to daughter, treasure those pearls that came from sea water, though they are jewels of the ocean, the are your mother's love token. Lovely poetry Sara… Beryl

Hi Sara, the The imagery in the poem is vivid and evocative. Phrases like "shimmered in the incandescent light" and "delicate flowers holding the strand in place" paint a clear picture of the necklace, highlighting its elegance and significance. The comparison of the pearls to "dime-sized" adds a tangible quality, making the scene more relatable. Best of luck in the contest..

awww, thank you Benjamin! I appreciate your supportive and kind words. Not sure if my poem has the depth that the sponsor may want. I just thought there was a subtle depth to the imagery of the vintage pearls. We shall see. enjoy your evening, Sara
