NOW THAT I REALIZE

My Granddaughter wrote this a few years ago she is now 16 and since lost her mother when she was 15 at the time and 14 when she wrote this. I think we all will be glad to know that these young people are the generation to finish where we leave off- It seems I have left us in good hands ..I am so proud of her "forward thinking".. ase,' and her coming to her own conclusions. ase'.
Now That I Realize
By: Sarah Wingo
Now that I am not blind,
I cannot pretend to close
my eyes and not see the struggle
Now that I can hear,
I cannot ignore the truth and knowledge,
that is struggling to be heard
Now that I have come to this realization,
I cannot continue with life,
knowing the truth,
yet okay with living the lie
I cannot continue being a part of
a society that teaches me to
disrespect myself, my family, and my culture
I cannot continue to be a part of a part of the problem
I must discover and learn more about myself,
the past and the world around me.
I must use my time to help my people see,
what has taken me my whole life to understand
I must use this power given to me,
to fix the broken world that
we have lived in for so long,
without even realizing that it is indeed broken
Coming to this realization has flipped the page
to a new chapter in my life
A chapter that has yet to be written
But now that I have become aware and conscience
I now know that it is - I - that hold the pen.
