The Mystery Behind The Bookcase

Katherine Grimps twenty one years old lived in the small beautiful french speaking town of Sherbrooke, Quebec in a small apartment. She lived alone. She was studying theatre at the University of Sherbrooke which she absolutely loved. She had high hopes of one day becoming an actress. She also worked part-time at a local used bookstore which she greatly enjoyed. Katherine Grimps loved the books and also loved the smell of old books. She also loved reading books and always had a book on her at all times. One day after classes Katherine was working at the book shop as usual when a male customer came in looking for a book. He wanted the childrens book Little Women by Louisa May Alcott for his daughter as it was her birthday coming up. Katherine goes to the childrens section and looks for Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. She pulls out the book and sees a red button. She wonders why their would be a red button but decides to press it and see what happens as she is curious as a cat. Katherine presses the red button and the book case moves to the side revealing a long dark and black tunnel. Katherine walks into the tunnel. She has always had a love for tunnels maybe because they are mysterious with a magic feeling to them so she enters the tunnel with a sense of excitement. To her tunnels are thrilling and fun. As soon as she has entered the tunnel the book case shuts behind her with a loud bang. She tries to open the book case but cant open it so she continues down the tunnel and comes to some steep stairs leading down but to where she has no clue. Katherine walks slowly and carefully down the stairs as she is afraid of falling and injuring herself and finds herself in a beautiful theatre with black curtains and red velvet all around. There are many people in the theatre getting ready for an event but what event she has no clue. She figures the event is probably a play. All of the people they are all smaller then Katherine. Compared to them she is the size of a giant. She is given a drink and told to drink it. She doesn’t want to drink and unknown drink but realizes how thirsty she is and so She does and she suddenly shrinks to the size of an elf. It happens so fast in the blink of an eye. She wants to become her normal size and be back in the book store working and being surrounded by books but doesn’t know how to do that. She asks directions on how to get outside and is give directions. She goes outside and sees a beautiful old and historic castle nearby. All around the castle are small cottages. She goes to the castle and knocks on the wooden door. A guard opens the door and asks Katherine in a gruff voice what she wants. Katherine says she wants to see the king and wants to know where she is. The king is busy and Katherine is told to come back the next day. The next day Katherine goes to see the king. She feels confident but upon seeing the king all of her confidence disappears into thin air. The king is a giant. He could easily kill her by stepping upon her with his enormous feet. He tells Katherine that she is in magic land. The only way to leave and get back home is if she organizes acts and puts on a play that the giant likes. Katherine has to wait until Friday to submit her idea for a play. She spends the rest of the week trying to come up with a good idea for a play. Friday arrives and no ideas have come to Katherine. Her mind is blank, totally empty and this is unusual for her. Usually her mind is full and racing like a maniac with thought and ideas. She has been stuck in magic land for a week now. Katherine thinks of books that she has read which she can turn into a play but doesn’t like the idea as she doesn’t feel it is original enough. She doesn’t want to take someone elses work and use it for a play. She then decides that she will write a play herself as she has a knack and love for writing. Now all she needs to do is come up with a title for her play. She wants her play to be interesting and attract attention. She wants the audience to stay on their toes. She thinks long and hard about a title and comes up with the dream. Her play is going to be about a dream. She knows that the will need to be the main character in her play. She takes the idea to the king but he thinks that it is rubbish and turns it down. He especially hates the title and does not think it will be interesting at all. Now two weeks have gone by. So now she needs to come up with a new title and comes up with the tale of lucky the elf. On the third Friday she goes back to the king and presents the title of lucky the elf. This time the king agrees to the title. Thinking of the title makes the king chuckle and laugh out loud. With a grin and a smile he tells Katherine to get to work and that her play better be a good one. He thinks the title is very cute. She now has to start writing the play and then get the actors together. She knows that she will be under a lot of pressure. In two weeks Katherine will need to present the play to the king and if he doesn’t like it Katherine will be stuck in magic land forever. And will never be able to go home, work at her beloved job and worst of all she will never be able to study theatre at university which she loves. Also her dream of acting as a career will never come true. So now every day from dawn until dusk with coffee in her hand, a notebook and a pen Katherine is busy as a bumble bee working on her play. In the tale of lucky the elf it begins with an elf named name Lucky. Lucky lives out in Ireland. But unlike his name he does not feel lucky. He feels miserable instead. He doesn’t know how to be happy and does not enjoy doing good deads for others. He doesn’t see the point of doing good deeds for others and all he cares about is himself. One day lucky is walking along feeling angry that he is forced to do good deeds for others when he trips over a log and hurts his leg. He tries to get help from people passing by but is just made fun of. Lucky stumbles home. He goes to the hospital but hospital staff wont see lucky. No one wants to see lucky and help him out now that he is hurt as he has complained about doing good deeds for others. Now lucky is getting a taste of his own medicine. Finally lucky realizes this and apologizes for his wrong doings. From then on he is a changed elf and like a good elf is cheerful and from then on and never complains about doing good deeds again. Yes screams to herself Katherine I have written my play now all I need are actors and I also need to design my set. Katherine gets the other elves involved. She is lucky the main character. She has two elves being lucky’s parents. She has elves making fun of lucky after he has fallen. She has elves working in the hospital and turning lucky away from the hospital. She finds a job for all of the elves which pleases her. Some elves also help her to design the set. Katherines play take place out in the beautiful country of Ireland. The day finally arrives for Katherine to perform her play. She performs it and the giant enjoys it. After the play Katherine thinks she will end up like magic back in the book store but doesn’t. she goes back to the king and demands to know why she is still in magic land. He tells her that she is stuck in magic land until the next full mood which is a month way. Like lucky the elf from her play Katherine begins to feel miserable, angry and depressed. All happiness has left her and she now has no energy left. All she wants to do is lie under the covers all day long. The other elves try to bring her out of her sad state but she just gives them the cold shoulder. The elves complain to the king about her. She is called in front of the king. The king tells her that there is another way that she might be stuck in magic land forever. She asks what that is and is told that if the words in her play come true she will also be stuck in magic land for. She goes back to her cottage and mulls over the words from the giant. She then thinks of the play that she wrote. She searches for her play and finds it. After reading it and comparing it to herself she realizes the words are starting to come true. Katherine then apologizes to the elves and decides to take advantage of the rest of her time in magic land. She has a smile on her face, she takes part in plays that the other elves put on, she reads literature, and takes part in the evening activities like sports, music and campfires. The day of the full moon finally arrives. Katherine thinks she will be back in the book store now. Instead she wakes up in the hospital. The first words after waking up are where am i? Katherine is told that she is in the hospital and that she has been in a coma. She is in shock and wants to know how she could have had a coma. She is told when she is pulling out a book for a customer she bangs her head hard against the book case and then blacks out. The customer is worried about her so calls 911 and she was taken to the hospital. She has been in the hospital ever since. A few days later Katherine is released from the hospital. She goes back home and rests for a few days. Finally she is well enough to start working again and goes back to work at the book store. She goes to the childrens section. She is not convinced that she had a dream. She pulls back some books and sees a red button. She presses the red button and the book shelf slides to the side revealing a long tunnel. Katherine gasps. She is in shock. Her dream was not fake. It actually happened. She pushes the bookshelf back to hide the tunnel. She is determined never to reveal what happened to her. Still she wonders then how she actually ended up in the hospital. She then wonders if the hospital was the part that she imagined. She lets the thought mull in her brain and then comes to the conclusion that could not be the case as her family was by her side and they were actually concerned about her and for her health. Katherine then decides just to get on with her life after her strange experience. She still loves working at the bookstore despite her experiences and still loves old books and also the smell of old books. She also goes back to life at the university.
