Daddy Daughter Discussion

It was a few weeks before Prom season when high school freshman Thea came into the kitchen after a full nine-hour day of work taking classes. Slamming her books on the table she gave her Father the sense Peyton’s proud girl was angry.

“Daddy, how could you?”

“How could I, what?” Peyton responded with a question.

“Change the spelling of our name, from Aphrodite to Afroditi?”

Peyton was taking back by this inquiry and put down his yogurt.

“We never changed the spelling of our name?” Peyton explained “it was my name, my father’s name and grandfather’s name. “

Sifting through her text books on the History of Greece Thea found the picture they discussed during the period entitled “History of Greece”. Pointing to it, “Then who was she?” the fifteen-year-old asked looking for answers.

“Well,” her Father started, “she is the Goddess Afrodite who you pray to when you want love.”

“I do not pray to someone when I want love,” Thea retorted.

“What do you do when you go looking for love?”

“If I see a boy, I like I take this,” Thea reached into her pocketbook and pulled out something that looked like perfume, “And I spray this on.”

“And what happens,” her Father was starting to be more inquisitive.

“I do not know, I have not had a reason to try it on,” she teased.

“I am sure one will come by soon,” Peyton reassured her picking up the paper which was quickly interrupted.

“About this spelling change,”

Quickly the periodical returned to resting on the table, “yes darling you are related sort of too Goddess Aphrodite.”

Sitting down very quietly the teenager listened, “you see after they found out what the Goddess did.”

“You mean bring love into the world?”

“Well, not exactly this one Goddess used to set men up by luring them into situations where they drop their guard and once that happens, she would hurt their feelings.”

“How?”

“How what?” Peyton returned with a question.

“How did she hurt their feelings?”

“By ending the experience asking the mortal question ‘cash or credit’?”

Thea started to understand as her Father continued. “So, hearing something scandalous was going on our family decided to distance themselves from this behavior by changing the spelling of our name.”

“Oh,” Thea said putting things together when the doorbell rang.

“Don’t run!!” Peyton screamed.

Peering through the kitchen Peyton saw an older boy then Thea standing outside. He watched her going from being very excited to very quiet in a matter of seconds before she closed the door.

Putting the paper down when Thea returned Peyton started to dig around to see what was going on, “So who was at the door?”

“A Senior boy that sits behind me in Greek History class,” Thea answered, “and he said ‘you are invited’ to the senior prom.

“That is great,” Peyton was so proud of his girl, “and what did you say?”

“I said I will have to think about it?”

“About what?” Peyton was confused.

“Whether to take cash or a charge card.”
