So I've published a few books and some people tell me they're too big, some say they'd love more pages. It's kind of a mixed bag. I generally tend to buy anthologies if I can that way I have most of, if not all the works by a writer, rather than having a shelf full of books of theirs. I hope that makes sense. I'm just wondering what others thoughts are on this. My shortest published book of poetry was about 150 pages, the longest was about 275. I fear going over that 275 mark simply because it becomes rather dense and I think that anything about 300 pages should be a collected works type of thing. Is there a problem with a book being only 100 pages as opposed to two hundred? Any comments, ideas or anything would be appreciated, thanks-Kevin

Some people do not have the patience to read a long book, especially one of poetry. I think that you should just make the book however long you think it should be and the people who are going to read it can just deal with the length. After all, you're the author. Your point of 150-275 is a good length for a book of poetry, though, I think.

My first book, 'In Forbidden Language' (Stillpoint Books, 2010)
is 131 pages

My second book, 'The Second Coming' (Stillpoint Books, 2012)
is 140 pages

My third book, 'If You Have One Moment' (Stillpoint Books, 2015)
is 87 pages

My fourth book, 'The Translator' (Transcendent Zero Press, 2015)
is 109 pages

My point is: It's your choice. You are the artist, the creator, the maker.

I hope that this helps.

There is no rule how long your books should be. My three are 100 pages and then 70 something for the other two. But 300 is not too long. 1000 is too long.
