WORKING ON:  Anthology/Tips for Budding Poets (poetry).

ABOUT ME: Late babyboomer Canadian born in the beautiful Eastern Townships of Quebec, raised in Northern Ontario, now living in Ottawa, I'm finding out that oncoming golden years offer a very rich perspective on life.

The themes of my poetry are found in everyday life. I write mostly free verse but I'm also a member of Haiku Canada and have had haiku published in various anthologies.

Please visit often my growing collection of poems and I hope you find many will resonate with you. I'd love to hear your comments.

By the way, my name is pronounced Lynn, and my avatar is an ink painting I created on rice paper years ago. The symbol means PLAY - something I have finally learned to do in later years and poetry is definitely my favourite form of play.

CALL FOR COLLABORATIVE BOOK PROJECT- WELCOMING COMMENTS & SUGGESTIONS

Blog Posted:5/10/2018 6:12:00 PM

PROJECT PROPOSAL:

My next PS contest will be a call for contributors towards a collaborative printed book (and ebook). The theme will be TIPS FOR MODERN POETRY with a target audience of BUDDING POETS OF ALL AGES.

I was inspired by a little book entitled SEEING THE BLUE BETWEEN: ADVICE AND INSPIRATION FOR YOUNG POETS.

Please provide your suggestions here on this blog or, if you prefer more privately, by SoupMail.

Here is the general plan, pending tweaking as comments come in…

Winners of my upcoming contest will be published as contributing poets:

CONTEST (DRAFT): MAX 60 entries (of course NO NAMES, as per PS rule)

PARTICIPANTS AGREE TO: have their submission printed in the said anthology with 1) their prior knowledge of which of their poems are selected, and 2) their consent if their text needs to be modified in any way.

SUBMISSION is a NOT A POEM but a multi-part contest entry (a sample entry follows further below):

1)  A short letter to novice poets e.g. “Dear budding poet, …” Tone should be personal, friendly and informal:

·   1st paragraph: your view of what modern poetry is (MAX 3 lines)

·   2nd paragraph, etc: offer your 10 tips (be clear, specific and original), (MAX 25 lines)

·   Last paragraph: describe what poetry has brought to your life, (MAX 3 lines)

2)  “My favorite THEMES are: …” - MAX 8 themes or MAX 2 lines

3)  ”My favorite REFERENCE sources are: …” -  MAX 5 (enumeration only)

4)  “Ten TITLES of favorite poems I’ve written (in order of preference):” - MAX 10 TITLES of poems no longer than 20 lines each (preferably different forms): – PREFERABLY AT LEAST ONE WITH: humor, shape, punch, uplifting, different… NO HAIKUS (Will be a separate contest because haiku have very particular rules) !! Judges will find your ten poems and make their selection. WORD OF ADVICE IN POEM SELECTION: avoid vulgarity, explicitly erotic imagery, hardcore political rants.

5)  “My literary BACKGROUND:” (mini bio: background, awards, writings, personal history when you started writing, etc) MAX 5 lines

6)  SUGGESTION for book title: MAX 2 titles

7)  Title your entry as if it was a poem

8)  Send a private soup mail if interested in being the 3RD collaborator for editing (more info below)

EXAMPLE OF FICTITIOUS ENTRY (just babble for the sake of illustration):

TITLE:  SPEAK FROM THE HEART

Dear budding poet,

To me, modern poetry is the expression of the soul in this cold, complex world of chaos and uncertainty. Modern poetry is often more raw and speaks from the heart and is meant to be direct and understood.

If I were to give advice to a novice of any age, I would say to pick up a pen and write in the unique way you see the world. Describe those personal ways you interpret what goes on in your universe. Write about what you find strange with respect to human relationships.  Jot down your thoughts about the strange things that happen around you. Share your reactions to injustices in the world. Fill a page with words as you sit in introspection.

Poetry has been a blessing in my life. I started writing in my teenage years and it helped sort out feelings, and I just fell in love with the satisfaction of turning sad feelings into ‘works of art’.

My favorite themes: mythology, whimsy, humor, spirituality, introspection, afterlife.

My favorite reference sources : www.shadowpoetry.com, www.howmanysyllables.com, synonym dictionary.

My TITLES of favorite poems I’ve written (in order of preference): Ocean blue. Kindness was her name. Johnny King. I love the blues. Longing for you. When I was young. Skylark. Starry night.

My literary background : I’m a homemaker, mother of 4, grand-mother of 6, with a love for expressing myself in poetry since the age of 12. (Please elaborate more than this)

Suggestion for book title:  ‘Modern Poetry Tips for Budding Poets’

May 10, 2018

P.S. Of course, the headings are for ease of judging and consistency – the book will read more seamlessly.

P.P.S. By the way, a succinct FORMS SECTION as well as a succinct TYPES OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE will also be incorporated at the end of the book.

P.P.S. To make it easy on yourself, copy and paste my whole blog (especially the contest rules and sample) into a blank document so you can then manipulate it at will. KEEP IN MIND THOUGH THAT THE CONTEST RULES WILLL HAVE BEEN UPDATED ONCE THE CONTEST IS LAUNCHED.

WINNING ENTRIES:

-  No pre-determined number of winners: targeting a minimum of 25 or 30.

-  May be asked to tweak or abbreviate for purposes of the book’s overview, to avoid repetition etc.

-  Only 3-5 poems will be selected for publication per contributor from the list provided (again, variety will be taken into account for the overall effect of the book)

-  For each non-winner, we will consider printing 1-2 poems.

GENERAL INFO:

CreateSpace will be used as the publisher, targeting a listed price of $20 per book. I will be creating the lay-out of the book with: 1) consultation from our esteemed colleague Emile Pinet who is far from a novice with CreateSpace, as well as  2) a third collaborating reviewer YET TO BE DETERMINED (must have editorial skills). The three collaborators will agree on the poem selections, intro, dedication, conclusion, editing, title of book, front and back covers.

PLEASE provide your comments, concerns and suggestions here on this blog or, if you prefer more privately, by SoupMail.

LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU.

HAVE A SOUPER DAY !!

Line xx

I've been asked "Why a 20-line maximum for poems?" My reason is that I have a visual of how I want this publication to look. I don't want any poem to fill an entire page (even less go onto two pages). That's because the audience is novice poets and I want to entice them to write. Short poems will be less intimidating for them and more likely to get a "I can do that too" reaction.

WOW, I am digesting all that I just read, but the initial WOW is WOW in a good way. What an endeavor you are taking on for others, you are truly gifting us all with this inspirational idea that I know will be a great deal of work, hopefully a labor hand in hand with joy. Let me marinate on this - I can already feel my muse's wheels turning. Thank you for all this, Line, all this and more. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Line, I stumbled upon this blog during the very few times that I have time on the Internet nowadays. It is an ambitious project which you are proposing. I should know - I have just done the final edit of my book which took five years to complete before I was wholly satisfied with it. A word of caution: The writing is the easy part. Researching can be fun. However, the final layout can be a headache if you are not familiar with it. But nothing beats the satisfaction of finally holding your "baby" in your arms. Best of luck with your endeavor. Regards, Su

Thanks, Suzette. Congrats on the near completion of your book, or baby as you so aptly call it. I am looking forward to the challenge. Thankfully I am retired and will be able to provide more time and focus on getting the book done as quickly as I can while not compromising quality. You can bet I will be reaching out to you at times and I hope you will be contributing to this project via my contest. Thanks again for your comments, Su.
Date: 5/12/2018 12:31:00 PM
Line, thank you so much for the invite. I am given to writing poems only. Mostly metaphorical. With very modest success. Long write ups with much technical details such as this blog-write is, I cannot focus on for much time. I cannot understand what theme I have to write on. In case I find I can handle the topic, I shall be glad to write. I will try my best to draw attention of other eligible poets known to me to this collaborative book project. ... Probir

Awesome, Jerry. It's too bad the Blog often gets overlooked because there are so many features on PoetrySoup, that it's hard to find the time to take advantage of them all.

Thank you for your soupmail Line. This sounds a brilliant idea, I'll be honest I'd never heard of most of the poetry forms until I joined soup, I'm no Shakespeare, well not yet anyway. I am in awe of some of the poets on here and learning quite a lot. But if your including novices I'm game. Tom.

Dear Tom, you are a prolific writer and your poetry is much enjoyed at PS, so it is obvious you would have interesting tips for novices... especially if you still feel like a novice yourself! Often asking the right questions is more important than knowing the right answers.
Date: 5/11/2018 9:01:00 AM
Line, thank you so much for the invite to your grand plan, it really sounds amazing. and working with Emile would be really something. I am so stretched for time with dancing classes and my writing being my top priority, just not sure I have time to participate, but maybe... let me dwell on it for a bit ... that's what I do Line, I dwell and ponder....

Really interesting, ambitious and admirable project Line! Just some thoughts: - It will be impossible to keep this anonymous as you will have to check out people’s poems from within their profiles - I don’t think this should stand in your way though - I’m a little unsure about the literary background section as many of us have no literary background but still have some interesting tips and poems to share. Maybe you could call this a bio and suggest people include any literary credentials in there. If I have any more thoughts, I’ll let you know!

As far as people's background, I am in fact looking for a wide range: people with lots of credentials and people off the street who barely know the forms. I will look at tweaking my wording. Thanks.

Thank you, Nina. You are quite right - it really can't be truly blind which, in fact, just means it will be more difficult for me to leave anyone out of the project. Anyone who knows me, knows that I try to be fair : I would try to help elevate a contribution to a higher level before cutting an entry out. I would be ecstatic if I received 60 entries that were worthy of printing. I guess I need to ask people to trust me.
Date: 5/11/2018 1:21:00 AM
Thx for the invite. Respect your effort on behalf of our art. I, too, have suggested a run at PS publication but merely in the form of a Soupers Anthology (perhaps annualized). I’m not the first. Your concept seems to be an effort at education for the best of reasons and for a worthy population. My desire: “Searching till the poetic perfection of an image conveys a thought so pure and universal one cannot help but weep, then act” has evolved toward imagist, Haiku, Kimo, Senryu, etc. product since 1970’s. Based on your initial approach, I am precluded from any involvement but cheerleading. All the best. I’ll buy a first edition. Go, PS, Go!!! :-)))
