HAVE THE POETRY PUBLISHING GOAL POSTS MOVED-a spin off

Agnes blog below prompts me to this question ...Have the published poetry 'goal postsposts' moved from print to the net.?

My 'impression' ( not a scientic study) from reading much  print poety of the last few decades is that ... already being a 'professional literary academic' is a major route to becoming a 'print poet'..another... is to be successful in some annual poetry award (often judged by similar literary professionals!)

Perhaps internet publication however on sites like Youtube,Twitter ( for example)  and poetry specialist sites often have a much larger readership than print output? being 'free' at point of access

In so many ways it seems the goal posts may have moved...which seems to me to be a good thing, if being 'read' is one of our reasons for writing

Hey, Brian, inre to your comment regarding family....While in High School english class my granddaughter told the class her Grandfather wrote poetry. They invited me in and for the next several years I was invited back to share my love of poetry. I even got published in the school newspaper and invited to present some of my poetry at several school/student events. Sooooo, I can say that there is nothing quite like having a "teen ager" stop you in the hallway and say "Hey, Mr. L, I really like you poems"....One never knows where the muse will lead...just follow

Indeed,John,much better than a sale of a couple of print books imho.Just think how many acorns you may have scattered that might become small oak trees one day?

And maybe the yearning to be published in print is that this seems to give a stamp of endorsement to one's poetic endeavors: here, I have an actual book, so I am a *serious* poet. (Which, of course, in the era of self publishing means absolutely nothing.) I can't imagine anybody publishing for the money, except for extremely few very famous poets with large editions.

Some of it seems to be a self-sustaining cycle: being published begets being published again. When I look at bios of poets, most seem to include a list of book titles and magazines where they had published. As if this establishes "credibility": if they published his stuff, he must be good, so we should publish him too. To be fair, there are magazines that read blind.

Shadowpoetry had a magazine such as that, Agnes. It was called SP Quill. Marie kept very few books in her bookstore when she stopped being active at Shadowpoetry but she sells the huge volume that contains all the poetry we published for that magazine (I was her editor). It's a treasure trove. She would accept only 10% of poems that came in.

Brian, I was really into print publishing when I started out. I won a publishing deal with Shadowpoetry and it was very uplifting to me; however, my books honestly did not even sell. I asked friends and family to go to Shadowpoetry's website to buy it. A few did. I talked with Marie, the owner of the website. She told that even my few sales were better than the fate of most poets having chapbooks published with her. In a nutshell, unless you are a famous poet or some kind of university professor or poet lauriate, I think publishing one's own book or even getting a publishing deal for a contest win will not much help one's readership. Places like Soup does THAT!! People come to Soup and track down poets for use of their poems. This to me is more important than pursuing print publishing.

Yes, of course. I have eight chapbooks and they cover less than 1/3 of all my poetry. One day I will have to self publish a very big book of all my best (for posterity)

Also Andrea I think family posterity is important .My eldest grand daughter is a teacher and astounded one class of teenagers that her gramps was a poet! So maybe at some kin at a future time will discover their literary forbear in family history researching.Maybe those print books and notebooks will be part of a dissertation on this whole topic.

Yes Agnes,being 'selected' for publication or as a 'prize winner' can indeed be a great motivation for a poet to press on with our poetic journey and exploring our gift.

It is funny you should write this blog, Brian, because I myself was going to do a spin-off post on publishing :) I was wondering about the motivations behind wanting to be published *in print*. If being read is the goal, posting on Poetry Soup would get a far larger audience than a small chapbook in a 100 edition. So I am wondering whether it's mere vanity? I have seen a variety of print publishing options. "Real" book deals as competition prizes, self publishing, small presses. I think there may be a reverse situation: poets may be more likely to aspire to literary/teaching professions because it incorporates aspects they love? I have lots of thoughts on this, but gotta run...

OTOH, I also met a number of not-that-famous poets who have astonishing numbers of poetry books out - ten or more. That has to be self publishing or knowing somebody at a press.
