Death Contest

Blog Posted:10/20/2017 2:47:00 PM

HI POETS, LISTEN UP.  ALTHOUGH THE CONTEST INDICATES IAMBIC PENTAMETER FORM I ASK THAT YOU PLEASE NOTE ABOVE THE POEM WHETHER IT IS IN BLANK VERSE OR ENGLISH SONNET BECAUSE THESE GO OUT AS EXAMPLES ON THE INTERNET AND ANYONE READING THESE WILL BE TOTALLY MISLEAD.

ALSO, WHERE DID ANYONE GET THE IDEA THAT PENTAMETER MEANS 10?

PENTA MEANS 5, AS IN PENTAGON AND SYLLABLE COUNT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!

PENTAMETER MEANS 5 METRIC FEET AND IF THAT HAPPENED TO BE ANAPEST OR DACTYL IT WOULD INCLUDE 15 SYLLABLES.

i HAD SOMEONE WRITE ME (A GOOD POEM IN BLANK VERSE) WITH 10 SYLLABLES BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY TRIMETER PLUS ONE IN EITHER DACTYL OR ANAPEST DEPENDING WHERE THE EXTRA ACCENT WAS TO FALL.WHICH IS OKAY BUT DO NOT CALL IT PENTAMETER BECAUSE IT IS NOTHING OF THE SORT AND BLANK VERSE CAN ACTUALLY BE IN OTHER THAN ANY SPECIFIC METER AS LONG AS IT HAS SOME CONSISTENT METER THROUGHOUT, WHERE THE ENGLISH SONNET MUST BE IN IAMBIC PENTAMETER. TO BE A TRUE ENGLISH SONNET.

i WILL REITERATE THAT IN PUBLISHING THIS MEANS NOTHING BUT IT DOES IN THIS CONTEST----PLEASE READ ALL OF THE RULES ONCE MORE.

Hello Craig. I did not know what Iambic Pentameter was so I looked online and this is what Wikapedia told me :-) So this is where I got the understanding that it is 5 iambic feet ... or 10 syllables. (see below copied from the Wikapedia definition) An iambic foot is an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. The rhythm can be written as: da DUM A standard line of iambic pentameter is five iambic feet in a row: da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM Straightforward examples of this rhythm can be heard in the opening line of William Shakespeare's Sonnet 12 and in John Keats' To Autumn

"To Autumn" and "Sonnet #12" were examples given by Wikopedia.

Keats' "To Autumn is not a good example (terrible example of iambic pentameter) Shakespeare's sonnet #12 is a good example however.

Thank you dear, the Bard and I (I called him Willy) were close friends and competed in pentameter, I usually won, so he offed himself (to Anne's chagrin). You are correct, of course, with your research, but it would be more easily heard (the meter that is) in my sonnet Juliet---in deference to my buddy Willy. Please write to the contest.

Funny thing is that a well written limerick has a very set meter and rhyme structure.

My problem is reverse of Constance's. I can write iambic but don't know what to say about death!! Can it be anything related to death?

The whole concept of death and dying and grieving and loss---yes, anything.

Craig, Iambic pentameter really is all Greek to me and using phrases like anapest and dactyl confuses me even more! With a well written haiku we are encouraged to 'show not tell', so if you gave some examples of what you are after it may help us learn:-):-):-) (My captcha is WAR lol) hugs Jan xx

Hi Jan, My last three sonnets were written in iambic pentameter (one's Italian and the other two are English/Shakespearean. The explanation of iambic pentameter in the form section is actually pretty good.

Craig, I could write you an awesome death poem because that is sort of my specialty BUT my Iambic Pentameter or any meter sucks so I must pass on this one, but I am anxious to read the winning poems !

There are so many misconceptions about forms and poetry and quite honestly, when it comes down to it form doesn't matter at all, it is the art of expression and the creativity in that pursuit; yet if we don't learn as many angles as we can to achieve our goals we will be at a disadvantage (we, as a collective pronoun). Some might argue that you don't need to study the past at all to know the future, that you don't need to know anything about Latin to understand English or the history of the Vietnam War to understand "whatever" but we do damn it. When those fine points of insignificance have been drilled into our silly skulls we might be able to learn what truly means something.
