Digging into a poem - Kim Rodrigues's Blog

Dear poets,

Don't be afraid to dig deeper into a poem. I have put my example poem below. Since it did not stay formatted when I copied it, I also have included the link.

There are different interpretations to my poem, "Sleep's Not the Mattress." You might think it is about dreaming, and that is okay, but if you dig in deeper you might notice the "rose" sheets, "copper" eyes and a "peaceful" breath that only expels. Further you will see a drawn curtain and that the "queen made her mark." All of the images are about death. Roses are often in funerals or laid on graves. In the past, people would put coins over eyelids. Also my poem speaks about "Spring" for that is when my mother died last year.

Saying all of this, I often enjoy what a poet adds to my thoughts. There are things that are seen that I myself might not have thought of. 

My Poem:

Sleep’s not the mattress, hard or soft. It’s Spring with a rose sheet. Expels her breath - a peaceful waft. Copper eyes and smile’s sweet. The curtain’s drawn - it’s dark. What lovely dreams - they’re stark. This queen, she made her mark. In pale of darkness— sleep’s not the mattress.
