Hi, thoughtful poetry and confronting art..... and mathematics, are my interest. Have been writing, poetrying and painting for about 20 years and mathematicing for about 25. Of course we all have thoughts about random stuff often enough, I like putting those random thoughts into verse making sense or putting them on canvas to be a provoker. I prefer all styles of poetry depending upon my mood.

By the way, unless i state that a poem actually occurred to me, then they are all made up, fiction, whimsical, not true events, they are not biographies and only touch on uncomfortable topics to make the reader question things. I believe poetry has the ability to make us question our own morals intimately, like how the bard made us question suicide in Romeo and Juliet.

Hi poets, I had a good day where I created a reasonable poem in about 20 minutes flat. I walked tall for the day feeling pretty good. Which brings me to the point of this blog..... What's ur ave. time to write a poem and what's ur quickest that made an OK poem?

Honestly, I couldn't tell you. There are times when it seems I sit and it flows right out and other times I nurse it along. I write down every thought and at some point go back and keep the good and throw out the rest. I have worked on poems for days and i have done them in minutes. I never really thought about it. I write until I'm satisfied.

Yep. I find though, that the longer it takes, beyond an hour or so, the less satisfying it is and the less natural flow it seems to have.

Lewis, I have limericks that took me minutes and other limericks that took me almost an hour because I had to reword a few lines to get the meter just perfect. It's the same way with any other poem. If it flows very naturally, it will be a short time to do it. If I am not sure where it will lead me as I start it, the process takes longer while the theme takes shape in my mind. Once I know where I am going, I can speed up, but I have taken hours to do a mere sonnet just pondering one or two lines that I need to have at their best! At first I averaged three hours a sonnet. Now I am at an hour or less on average.

I love it when the words just roll out.. And it has the start middle end done quick. But I've also come back months later and "fixed" poems.. But this didn't give as much gratification.

I think speed is irrelevant and I never consider it. I have altered poems 40 years after I wrote them and left them the same forever after taking 5 minutes to write them. I think most good writes flow outward easily but then take time to perfect. I believe it is a mistake usually to try and perfect as we are writing because it slows the inspiration - let it flow and then go back later with "new eyes" to revisit. Speed is worth nothing unless you are answering a Jeopardy question or dodging a snake bite, quality is the only value even if it is to yourself.

I do go back and edit poems, even my limericks which I can write in a couple of minutes. I took 5 days to write 'homeward bound' for your contest Craig and it will always be one of my favourites as I found it such a challenge. I agree with you that speed is irrelevant when crafting a poem and I can write a few lines and come back days later to finish it:-) hugs Jan xx

I can write a limerick in minutes but many contest poems can take a lot longer, it depends on the theme and the form. The biggest challenge for me was my 'homeward bound' poem. The contest was to create a lyric to set music, as I am not musical it was written over about 5 days and is probably the poem I am proudest of writing.:-) hugs Jan xx

I wouldn't post a poem I wasn't happy with, but the Homeward Bound poem is special to me as I found it such a challenge. I can write a limerick or a string of footles in a couple of minutes and still be very proud of those poems :-)hugs jan xx
