My biography will be very limited for now.   Here , I can express myself in poetic form but in real life I much rather prefer to be far less forward  I am a 60 year old American citizen , born and raised in the glorious South! A heritage that I am very proud of and thank God for as it is a blessing indeed ~

Currently married to my beautiful young wife(Riza) a lovely filipina  lady and we have a fantastic 7 year old son, Justin ~

I have truly lived a very wild life as a younger man but now find myself finally very happily settled down for the duration of my life~

I decided to rest here and express myself with hopes that it may in some way help others, for I see here a very diverse  and fine gathering of poets, artists, and caring folks~

Quickly finding friends here that amaze me with such great talent~~

I invite any and all to comment on my writes and send me soup mail to discuss

whatever seems important to them ~

Writing Rules & Breaking Them

It has been said that there are only two story lines: a journey happens or a stranger appears. It has also been said that there is a formula that makes for a well written story. Your antagonist needs to do X, your protagonist needs to do Y. We are told good writing must have some conflict, someone learns something, someone solves something, and someone helps someone. In between X&Y there are five differentiating circumstances. Supposedly if you follow the formulas many websites, published authors, and editors agree upon then you will have a successful book, sell lots of copies, and have a hoard of happy readers praising you in life. I suggest throwing out the rules after you mastered them, abandon all inhibitions, and write from your heart and with whimsy and exuberance. It might not be an award winning story, but I guarantee you that it will include some really good threads that you can continue an amazing story with later.

I have my B.A. in English and have studied many novels. I am an avid reader and have read copious amount of books. I can tell you that reading a book that follows the X, Y, and Z rule is easier, but the ones who break the rules are the ones who stand out. I wrote a piece recently and I threw out the rules. It was quirky and fun. The people who read it LOVED it!! It broke the boundaries of what is considered a good story. It had such energy because it was not hemmed in by what is systematically thought of as perfectly written.

No one went on a journey (inwardly or outwardly) and no one new arrived in my story. It was just a fun little piece. The rules are there for a reason and yes you should learn them, but with all rules they are made to be broken. Rules are there to give you guidelines on how to start, where to build from, and what is accepted by the masses, but breaking those rules is thrilling. Your stories go into an area where magic happens. Your story touches the hearts of the people who follow no rules, who enjoy some chaos in their story, and who like reading something new. Pick you own beat and write to it!

Poetry is a perfect example of breaking the rules. You can write a whole piece without any punctuation. You can never capitalize a word, you can make your lines end where you want and move to the next line. There are rules for poetry too. You need to show, not tell, you can use alliteration to highlight a point, and numerous other rules, but once you learn them, again you can throw them out. Following the poetic rules again will get you an amazing writing piece. I have written following those rules for years now and now love to push the boundaries of my poetry as well.

Writers struggle with a balance between rules and bending them. It happens with every word and every sentence. We doubt that we can write anything new. That what we write will not matter to anyone at all. We struggle with trying to write something new, to create words in a way that matter beyond the old rules. We as writers doubt, get writers block, learn rules, break rules, write when we feel like, what we feel like, or abandon story lines as we feel like. All of our writer may not be abundant in flow and creativity. Honestly though we need to write through crap to get to the worthy stuff.

I had someone read a rough draft of my work the other day. He said to me there are mistakes. I said of course it is a mind dumping story. I wrote and wrote and wrote. I did not stop to edit. He said but you have a degree. People who do not write do not understand our writing methods. I tend to dump the story on paper with a pencil. Yes I do it old school. I like the feel of the pencil as thoughts flow out of my mind and onto the paper. I let it all flow. I do not censor. I do not correct spelling, I just dump it all out there. If you edit your writing as you go you will miss some amazing good bones to another storyline. Your writing is already limited to what you write down, why do you want to edit it more? Now I am not saying all that you write is good, most of it honestly is going to be crap, but ohhhhhh those few lines that stir magic into your pot of creativity. Yes those would be gone if you choose to fix everything as you mind dump onto your paper you will lose them.

Another writers issues is what time do you write. Some people say morning, some say I grab 15 min here or there as I can, and some say that they stay up all night and write. Let me say this about writing times, there are no correct time for you to be writing. We are all different. We all create and process at different times, rates, and our productivity will suffer if we are forced into a notch of time when we are not ready to cre.....

Note: I was doing  some research on great writers and exceptional poets. I always continue to try to improve my writing-- so far it has been 46 years long and I am still trying to learn more on composing poetry. I fear and know such is a never ending task, because man is an imperfect creature.  I hope some of you many and very creative and freedom loving poets may find this interesting, informative and useful. The most literary provocateur I have come across is US poet Charles Bernstein,he considered 'the reader/listener enters the 'verbal space' and in effect becomes a part of the poem.'He will be featured in a forthcoming ' Mover&Shaker' in my ongoing blog series.

My friend, edges have never scared me. It is the bulk of elitist and arrogant crap that far too far irritates me. So-called modern poetry experts, too oft give little or no acknowledgement to the heart of a poem and instead place predominate importance on perfect form/ and rules that any good writer knows to ignore if it interferes too heavily with the heart, soul and message of the poem- the author's intended with goal. Some poets see this while others do not, IMHO.. Thanks for commenting......

Hi there, this is one of the best blogs I have read in a while and yes I do not use soup much but I peek in now and then and a friend told me about this blog. I am at the 'following the rules' stage but realise it is constricting but necessary. It is like script writing when you are new you have to follow the set rules when you are famous you can send it in on the back of a fag packet.

Thank you one and all. By the replies given so far , it seems to me that I am not alone in my view that artists , poets are to be given more freedom to express themselves-- not less. Some are so free spirited that they openly rebel against(how dare they) modern poetry critics/publishers and self-glorified poets that exalt themselves by belittling those that break rules and dare to do so as true artistic expression, not because they are ignorant of the restrictive rules(as the exalted accusers love to declare) but rather because they refuse to be so limited by them..

A Little Rant, On The Arrogant Commands Hurled At Me.. The words, the signs, the symbols, the arts, the three* The birds, the lines, the cymbals, the arts, the three* Poetry is... the all, the call, the wall, the three* Sweet life is, the living, the giving, the forgiving, the three* Dear dreams are, the prize, the size, the surprise, the three* Now I am at ease, I did as I please.* I over-used the dreaded word- "the".* Yes, poetry will yet endure* we are so sure, none of us are pure.* Can this you see, lakes, rivers, oceans, and blue seas* This old poet has lived far too long, I write what I please.* I'll not bend and cry on my knees, I, ME, MYSELF- WE THREE.* Robert . J. Lindley. 12-10-2018 Note- A brief rant on the arrogance of poetry critics that tell me I am not to use more than once per verse the word, "the". I hope you may agree, there are many fish in the poetry sea From the commands some dare try to giveth me unto me, I dare tell critics, these arrogant self-made gods, poppycock comes from thee.

Thank you P.S AWTRY... Once every other blue moon I cut loose and spit out the poison that has been building up inside me. I did at least manage to, leave out the multitude of curse words that the venom had also built up in me.

Hi Robert, interesting blog, I don't mind writing in form, to me it is like putting a puzzle together, but my fav is when I can just write, fling all rules away, throw away the punctuation and caps, write like EE Cummings ~

I too love the feel of my hand on pen. Nowadays can find little time to write. I like to have time in front of me to focus, so it's killing me to be so busy with other things. yes, we are artists and I agree with what you say; however, people can't use non grammatical sentences with bad line breaks and expect us to understand what they are saying. If a person is a pro, he can probably get away with no punctuation, etc. because he has a "writer's mind" and can pull it off. I would love to be a rule breaker, but my mind is too organized (logical thinking) for it. I love patterns and the beauty of a well crafted poem with good meter, rhyme, etc. If I could actually write free verse, I would do it, but it requires a certain kind of mindset that I do not own. Anyway, I enjoyed your blog and the comments it inspired.

Hi Robert, first of all I would like to let you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. A few years ago, I realized that poetry is more than rhyme and meter. I love writing using different forms and such, but there are no rules when writing from the heart. I know writing in lower case is different, but I love the way words feel when I write in this way. I feel every word when I write, every emotion. One more thing, I never rush my thoughts, they always find me. When the time is right, they caress the page. This is a wonderful Blog. Thank you for sharing, and thank you for being here. My best to you. ~ Brandy

I used to write 'old school' with pen in hand and scratch out words, phrases, replacing them with new ones until what I'd written became more like a word search puzzle than a poem. I've found that using a pen slows me down, far behind what my brain is telling me to write, so I've become a keyboard writer. Typing is much quicker and allows easy, and less messy changes. I often wear running shoes to outrun the rules, and I know there is no 'best' time to write, for when words seek to escape we'd better be ready to unlock the door. ROBERT, thanks for the insightful thoughts from Ms. Aruta.

You're right about the hero's journey and about breaking rules. Publishers (most) prefer something predictable and close to form whereas poets purposely change words or phrases, we hack at language until it becomes the pliable substance we use to build poetry and we add the right mix of emotion to create our masterpieces. Great blog Robert, way to get the ball rolling.
