Cyndi MacMillan lives in a small town in Ontario that is home to North America’s largest working waterwheel. Her writing has appeared in notable Canadian literary journals and local newspapers.

A Cruel Light is her debut gothic mystery (4/4/2023). She has been a Jill-of-all-trades, but for as long as she can remember, she has dreamt of being a novelist.  Hard work and the wonderful team at Crooked Lane Books have made that dream a reality.  Please note that her husband and daughter kindly keep her coffee mug filled when she is wrestling with a suspenseful chapter.   During a pandemic lockdown, the family adopted a rescue cat who chirps.

When not writing, Cyndi enjoys reading Gothics, scrapbooking, and losing horribly at board games.  Works-in-progress include the second (and third) Annora Garde Mystery, a Canadian noir series, and a standalone horror mystery, so more often than not, Cyndi is writing.  She is a member of Crime Writers of Canada.

WHATTA PAIR YOU GOT THERE: A WORKSHOP ON IMAGERY AND WORD PAIRINGS

Blog Posted:4/7/2015 9:30:00 PM

LET’S PLAY!  PICTURE PROMPTS FOR WORD PAIRINGS! ;)

Some time ago, I blogged about uncommon word pairings and how these pairings can breathe life into a stale poem and—since  that blog was such a hit—I  thought we could play with some images and word pairings again.

Quick refresher:

Word pairings are made with:

1)  a noun and a verb

2) an adjective and a noun

3) an adverb and a verb

(though all writers are advised by those-in-the-know to be cautious of overusing adverbs and are often told to avoid adverbs all together,  I have noticed that one or two adverbs in a poem when used for uncommon pairing, can “set-off” a verb,  change its context?)

Example:  Red font shows uncommon word pairings.

Kite Festival

by Michelle Brown

As the sun cauterized, the kites began their crumpled descent
from dragon to dithering rat, snaking at the ankles

of toddlers. Why now, from the balcony of another city,
am I thinking of you: diseased language,

that spit and crackled at me on the train. Men,
and women becoming men, thrummed

like light passing through a subway, picking up clicks
and swoops and flashes, where I was posed,

permanently, as a woman abroad. From my pilgrim’s lookout
I could watch how the wind jimmied

the remainders. Rustled the tarps. The only kite master still on the field
kicked at the falling animals, collected their strings, mourned

their ghosts. Only the lucky ones
catch a break of wind.

(this is an excerpt, only, posted here for study purposes only.  If you’d like to read the rest of this poem, please use the link I’ve supplied below the poem.  It was published in the Puritan, an excellent on-line poetry journal.)

http://puritan-magazine.com/two-poems-49/

sooooooo...

Here are some picture prompts:

What can you see in these pictures?  Can you compare one of the images to something else?  If it is something you have heard before, if it sounds familiar, then it is not uncommon.

1 -- city scene

2-- desert scene

Look at number two... desert scene, now look at these pictures... do you see the imagery?

EVEN :

3) Homeless

4) Abandoned farmhouse

5) Garden Party

6) Breakfast at Tiffanys

7 Country Road

Pick one, two, all.. what can you see?

Example the last one, for me, country road?  I see

licorice meanders through avocado stubble

NOW TAG, YOU'RE IT!!!

Hi Cyndi! The first time I looked at your blog-- I saw the same thing--that's kinda cool we thought of feet. You got me challenged with this and I should really really be doing something else but I can't resist, so maybe just maybe I will come back and share what I was able to eke out of your picture prompts. Very interesting! Real quick for now, and very rough...#7 squid ink noodling through pear green couscous

# 5. I see a man with mommy/women issues walking by: Bearded man-child stuffs primitive desires into mother's marsupial pouch. He skulks by donning snake eyes, invisible to peach-blossomed women who sip sunlit aphrodisiacs.

May I use what you saw in #4? I will show how I can piece what you see, Rhonda sees and I see into one poem, short, and I will make sure to acknowledge your contribution to the poem. I won't do seven poems, but I might do three, to show what pairings can do to a poem.

Perfect. Can I use that on this blog? I know where I will go next with that. I see "open aquariums" lined up side by side, each enclosed within themselves, though they could reach out and touch each other.

I can see how you see the shell... all that emptiness. There is something so haunting about an empty farmhouse, because we know how busy it once was, all the coming and going, wash hung on a line, canning in the kitchen... now... nothing.

Morning Ladies... er.... HERE it is morning ;) Eileen, if you've ever looked at clouds and seen a rabbit, if your were a child who saw a monster made out of the shadow of a chair... then you can do this! You look at it and let your imagination go mental! Follow no rules of law. Like Alice down the rabbit hole. Think of all the things that surround YOU, not me... the food YOU eat, the music YOU listen to, YOUR experiences... Maybe in the face of the homeless man, you might see a bombed building or an ancient cathedral. Hugs!

There are thousands of reasons to write poetry. Publication is only ONE of them. The most important reason to write is that if you are a poet and you don't write poetry, you die inside. If you write to give yourself joy and spread it? Ah... that is all that is needed. Hugs, hon. Be happy.

Hey sweetie...Maybe my mind is dull! ;) I'm not good with imagery. I know that. I read some poets here and I try to see how the words connect...sometimes grammar is out of whack, but the imagery is superb. An ideal write would be a mixture of both...I'm not being negative, sweetie. I'm just saying...I'll never be able to see things that way... Does it discourage me? Yes, it does. But...I'm learning to accept and try to move as much out of my comfort zone as I can. I admire your creativity and eye for the....See? I'm stuck for a word...Love ya for trying to help.

:) Tangerine very good... now, what else mounds? Can you imagine something else that even one of those shapes reminds you of? Something on a fish? A reptile? An insect? The home of an insect (hint hint you said hills... ) I saw toes! LOL. I see feet sticking out of sand, like a person who's been buried by a toddler on the beach :D

Hugs back! Last time I did this, I asked all the poet who left word pairings if I could build a collaborated poem right here on the blog... the poets said they enjoyed it. I may ask the poets again if they'd like to see this. I'd pick one or two of the images and combine the pairings for those images.
