Open Poetry Contest 2 Judged

This contest was judged in a...what was it again?..."strict, even-handed manner" (thanks for the prompt, Doug, did I get that right?) with not a 'harshly' in sight! Lol

Seriously, the standard was well up on my previous contest. The higher the standard, the more of a mental workout it gives the judge, and I certainly had my work cut out judging this one! Eleven poems went through to the second round, and from there six made it onto the winners' list. The six winning poems are all superb, and it really was a nightmare trying to sort them into numerical placements. They are all very good in very different ways, but the poem in first place was a clear-cut winner: a stunning contemporary sonnet that riveted my attention immediately.

Thank you to all who were brave enough to enter, and my congratulations to the six winners!

Do another, but get mean and hurt us poets that want to be flailed..... can't learn to step on warm coals till the hot ones have stung enough times.....lol...

Thank you, Charlotte, for such a high honor in your contest, it was very unexpected and certainly made my day. I showed my sister and she said "she didn't get it" so I'm glad sibling opinions weren't part of your judging criteria :)

the one poem to me that sticks out with a voice, melody, cadence. it seems so natural, unforced, smooth. the one poem i read 5 times was parker's.

carrie, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place poems could've been in virtually any order, in all honesty, nothing much to choose between them - all so good - i shuffled them around repeatedly, and i'm still not sure i got it right! lol
