Colloquialisms...local flavor?

COLLOQUIALISM: a special use of a word or phrase particular to a region

I was thinking about how diverse we are here on the Soup and got to thinking>>>>

what are some interesting things about where we call home starting with words or phrases?

My home is here in western Pennsylvania not too far from Pittsburgh and we certainly have

some colloquialisms ;such as "I am going to red up my room" meaning clean and straighten it***If you get in someone else's business you are being nebby***Then there is the rather insulting title someone who is absolutely not a big fan of yours might lay on you that you are a real jagoff!!And if my hair is dirty I need to get it "worshed" ! And one last one for you is the grouping of a bunch of peeps as "yinz" which is the equivalent of the down south "ya'll >>>>> So what about where you live? Share with us if there are any local colloquialisms you are aware of **** I find it very interesting that we are all so different yet come together here for our love of poetry>>>Thanks yinz and have a fabulous week! I grew up in the South. My ancestral roots are deep in the south. When I went to college, I met people who called ones "singles", who called coke "pop", who took a "ma'am" or "sir" at the end of an affirmative answer to be provocative or insulting. Was an eye opener. Then I moved to Texas. I walked in a diner and men had their hats on (which is as taboo in the south I grew up in as wearing white shoes before Easter) and it HIT ME! SOOOOOOO much more is a matter of preference than of right and wrong. Like MOST of it is a matter of preference. Am so glad I figured that out in my early twenties, my life has been so much more joyful for that! Cool post, thanks. Namaste ~N

I'm from Texas, but there are whole books on how we talk, so I'll go with a few from Georgia, where I now live. A shopping cart is a buggy. You don't push a button, you mash it. Instead of 'You da man', you just say... Son!!! - kinda drawn out though.

A funny in a VERY awkward way story...My grandmother (father's mum) was a warbride and spoke very proper English. I am not sure which part of England she was from.. my Great Grandmother (my mother's grandmother) was from another area of England. Now, she had this habit of saying to her son, "You are such a prat." and she said it with this soft glow on her face. A head shake, but tender, you know? Well... I thought it was a term of endearment. It was in our family (at least my mother's side) and ahem, here on soup we were in the midst of a disagreement (about pictures on poems, I think?) and I said to a dear friend here, a chum, "Prat," thinking it was a kind of sweet banter term, like "nilly." and the person was deeply offended. I then did a google search and FREAKED OUT. Apparently, to everyone else in the UK, prat is a full out insult! I was so embarrassed and upset that I did not bother to explain the scenario... and it would have been pointless at the time, as chins were up... now, lol, I wonder if he will read this and think "Ohhhhhhhhh," or better yet, just call ME a prat, in which case I'd kiss him on both cheeks... (My Brit Great Grandmother married a French man, I am such a mixed breed. LOL!) Nice blog!
