Soupers rise to the occasion...

Blog Posted:1/1/2014 11:26:00 AM
Well, it is a new year and there are many exciting things on the horizon for PoetrySoup.

Also, we just wanted to thank all of you Soupers who have contributed to a making PoetrySoup a haven. In this world, there are always people that can’t get along with others. Unfortunately, PoetrySoup is NOT immune to this sad attribute of existence. So, use the block poet feature, if necessary. We will soon be applying this feature to SoupMail as well. Anyway, do not let a handful of bad vegetables spoil the Soup.

Here are a few reminders for the New Year:
  • Re-read our Terms and Conditions
  • If you post something on a PUBLIC forum (i.e. PoetrySoup Blog), there will possibly be dissenting opinions. Voicing a difference of opinion is not wrong. If fact, it should be expected when controversial subjects are broached. HOW you voice your opinion is a different matter. It can be done in an appropriate manner.
  • If someone is causing too much trouble, block them. This feature helps our computer program determine who the trouble makers are.
  • There are enough troubles in this fantastic world without having to add to them here.
  • If you don't have anything nice to say, think a little longer ...or don't say anything at all.
We have confidence that you Soupers can rise to the occasion. Help show that PoetrySoup is NOT like the rest of the world!

Kirk: Spock!

Kirk: Yes.

Kirk: ...the needs of the few...

Spock: I have been and always shall be your friend.

Spock: Live long and prosper.

The great thing about this planet, is the differences that are close, and on our continual peripheral. It's what's within these parameters that makes this/our world special. But it's also the way these differences communicate and enjoy such linked communication. This breeds knowledge, it should never breed anything else. Poetry Soup is a haven, and I'm proud to be here, and more importantly, be accepted. Apologies for taking up two postings, James :)

There has to come a time on this terrific Poetry site that has taken years of dedication by the owners, administrators to say. Sometimes we have to agree to disagree, and get back on with what we are here to do. And that is to express in words in a poem, not in a blog, unless it's purely constructive to our said issue. Not to bicker like hungry chickens after little feed on offer. It's 2014, and the Blog on the Soup is constructive, forever. Apart my words, a Happy New Year to all, and lets allow the Soup to flavour, simmer at times, but to never boil over, James xxxx

It grieves me to witness fighting and bickering between members of the soup family.Because I do think of the soup as a family.I And of course it is a very large international family so with such a large group there as bound to be some disagreement but it's all in the way you approach things at least that's how I feel. As TPS has pointed out we are adults! We should savor our differences and rejoice in our communityholding so many different kinds of people together all for the love of creation.Let's agree to disagree at times and appreciate our small differences...hugs to everyone and best wishes for inspiration in 2014!!

Please indulge me again! This was recently sent to me by a lady friend of mine and once again, I thought it might apply to this blog......."To be kind is more important than to be right. Many times, what people need is not a brilliant mind that speaks but a special heart that listens"

The point I was trying to make was not the same point Dee was making. I was trying to put forth that the language itself [most if not all] & certainly in the USA, [so I am not blaming one country more than another] is not gender neutral. Language is the cornerstone of culture & all Abrahamic faiths [In the beginning their was the word and the word was God] At the very least legal language & recourse should be gender neutral we are all humans. I don't know about other countries woman were denied their rights to own property & legal status as individual inside of their marriages for years.

Hi Deborah..Anyone should be called as He/She wishes to be called. You like to be called Deborah the poet and that is who you are..Of course I won't fault you in that..I never did and never will.Everyone should be respected in a way they feel respected. The only words I've written were to clarify that ob my european isle and others i mentioned men and women are treated equally.I know of countries in the world where women are discriminated and it hurts to see such things and that is why I feel fortunate that I live in a country such as mine..Dosn't mean its perfect..but at least everyone is treated with dignity and alike.Re myself..You can call me as you wish dear :

There are still places in the world where there is a bride price. And all I asked for form line one is respect, as a woman and as a poet, the respect of being titled, named as I chose to me. I am a poet.

Hi Deb..You remind me of an old movie fiddler on the roof. : ).There was a time when things were like that..but the generations I remember till my great grandmother all chose their husband.Re legal matters..If my husband or I die..The other half inherits it all.The child gets only a small percent share of the house snd properties. If We want our child to inherit none or more..We go to a notary and do a will..The way we both agree about dear..zIts how it is on my european isle and many neighbours such as Italy etc.. Now I am smiling : ) dear.. No money can buy love..Re words..yes they are powerful tools Deb

SO my point is the WORD must change first! When the word changes it is a sign the culture is changing. When the culture changes the law will change it all starts with the word.

Some cultures even pay a bride price, this happened in the US too. Until 1904 in many states when a husband died the estate when to his children because of the laws regarding woman. In the 19th century some laws regarding property ownership changed.

I will be the first to admit that I have gotten caught up in a few of these petty spats although I never started them...I posted this quote on another spat-blog and I think it applies here too...A eulogy quote from my father's lifelong friend at his funeral service: "Jim was the most humble man I ever knew, but he didn't KNOW he was humble, because if he had KNOWN he was humble, he would not have been humble anymore"...

Soup, what happen too blocking our poems and blogs from the view of he/she whom we have blocked for good reasons. This would eliminate all the hate and negative attacks when blogging freely. I also feel that when a poet is blocked he/she should not have any access to any contest we host. TPS, this is coming from something I experience when a poet did not place in my latest contest. This poet showed so much bitterness. I just don't think it is right to allow a block poet around our blogs, poems and contest.

I have never used the term racist? I might I said sexist? I think it is very obvious and clear just from the number of their replies, who can not tolerate anyone else's opinion but their own. If I feel person [x] is sexist it's simply my opinion. Primarily what I ask for and give in return is to try to do what the poet wants. If they want to be called Dee I stop calling them Cyn. If I don't want to be called Mrs. [& I don't] politeness would mandate ;) you call me Debbie.

Maybe soup you need to add a section, (for adults only) *not for x-rated junk of course. Where one as a member can go post a poem and not worry if it will be removed. Too little...too late. I have friends who have left...have been forced to leave...are in the process of leaving. I'm sorry, but I have not found the blog wars to be on subject matters that will affect world change. Word meanings change over time. I'm known to be a feminist, and my students are made aware of gender inequality constantly. I refer to myself as a poetess...WITH PRIDE. Too little space to delve into this here. I'm sorry. The blog wars HAVE GOT TO STOP. Bickering and fighting over who is better in writing poetry...condescending attitudes. What is the point? We are here today and gone tomorrow. Bomb blasts kill innocent people in my country all the time. Please, get perpective.

Soup the truth is, we are all different and will react differently to your proposals. If you really wanted a place without difference ; you should had open a soup kitchen, and not a poetry site. Poetry comes in many forms, and not all forms are pretty. Besides, you have many forums where one can talk poetry freely. TPS, sometimes poets buy PM's so they can blog about the color blue.

Well, I enjoy when a souper who has been absent fills us in, tells us about travels or illness or family problems. I liked Tim's movie blogs. I liked Chris's blog about trying to get matches (funny!) I like blogs about everything, really

Soup Newsletter highlighting new poets to soup... not dissention... blogs on devices... nope not dissention. Cards for my fellow soupers in distress, suffering loss, illness. Nope not dissention. Contests to challenge my fellow soupers to new styles. Nope not dissention. Not consistent my dissention, but yes, recently, more vocal and frequent. There are times when things should be said.

Cyndi you are agreeing with exactly what I am saying life is poetry in many forms and guises and if someone wants to discuss how a poem can be in a garage can that is great because it is about poetry and that is my point….

It would be good if people learned how to discuss things maturely without getting upset. But many people cannot do that.

Agreed, there are times when things should be said. The problem however is often people do not know how to say it properly....with peace as the goal.

Well TPS You allow conversations in these blogs that are absolutely nothing to do with poetry and they get out of hand to the point (as i said in another blog) that it becomes an on-line boxing ring with nothing barred, they become very personal and hurtful to some people and yet you just sit back and watch it happen and it is no use saying you do not read blogs as the evidence that you do is below me. It is you who needs to step in and stop it by sending a warning message to those involved and if they continue do not waste time in barring them. I have said I am leaving but I have had many requests to stay and I would if things improve on this site and it gets back to the haven it once was…

Agreed F. J. Thomas. And we will no longer tolerate blogs that are only there to air personal grievances with individuals. Many good poet's accounts will be deleted for not following this rule.

Yes, and we have done that David. In fact we issue a warning on every new blog post so when accounts are deleted it cannot be said that ones were not warned. :-) Besides, you Soupers do a good job of emailing us with problems.

David, I've seen and learned how the soup handles situations. I've been here 4 years, and just this past year 2013. I' had to do more standing up and fighting for myself, without the soup coming to my rescue. They recently deleted a very nice blog I had bringing in hope for myself. but, yet they leave others were a male poet thinks it's okay to call me a dog

I have seen a poem in a garbage dump once. It was looking right at me, I swear. It was a candelabra poking out of box... it wore a poem.. I just haven't written it yet.

David, You know I think the world of you. Is your daughter better? Don't you think all life is poetry? Cancer is poetry and so is a car wreck and the man who slapped his wife across the street, the boy staring out the window. How do you separate life and poetry???
Date: 1/1/2014 12:23:00 PM
Here's the thing, Mark. When you block a poet it causes additional problems. They get angrier. They write spiteful poetry, jab at you.. Now, I don't block poets because I've seen and read on Soup what happens when you block someone... WAR! That leaves the option of ignoring.. hmm... sometimes SAFER, but not necessarily more MORAL. Sometimes ethics, damn those pesky ethics, they are such a nuisance, get in the way. So then you stop biting your WOMANLY tongue and speak out, not only for yourself, but for others, even the others who only want all the noise to just stop, you risk much. Guess what? I'd rather take the high road, which IS IS IS IS IS sometimes voicing dissention and causing discomfort. I'd rather utopia, peaceful co-existence, people who respect everyone regardless of race OR GENDER. Will it happen if we bury heads in the sand. Did it for a certain Parks on a bus? She stood up. She spoke up. And so do I... I can not apologize for standing firm. I only ask others to stand with me. So... hmmm... now what?

I don't know since I don't consistently voice dissension inside or outside of soup. When I have AS THE NEED ARISES, voiced dissention, there are times it has created change, for the positive.

Well, if you do not read the poet's work (ignore them) that can be a solution...also, we can delete accounts if someone gets out of hand. We have more resources at our disposal. How does consistently voicing dissension work in your life outside of the Soup?

I preferred Kirk's response. The needs of the one .... it's sometimes the braver and more nobel thing to do. But, certainly not as simple or as popular.
