Would you like some ENCOURAGEMENT? Some editing advise? A PROD to publish?

I am starting a writer's group of a maximum of six poets. We will edit each others verses and encourage and assist each other in submitting verse to magazines which PAY for short stories or for poetry. So far I have accepted 1 person Joann. The results will not be posted here and correspondance may occur in soup mail or email. We will share leads. For example:

http://www.grainmagazine.ca/submissions.html one more that is tops.... very upper crust, very current. Pays $50 per page, must follow submission criteria to the letter. This publication is available across Canada at bookstores such as Chapters (Indigo) as well as some independent bookshops. Lovely publication. Now, I feel a poem calling... I barely have a word of it in my head, but it keeps saying, "I'm here. For pete's sake let me out!" We'll see what it is... It is a frightening thing. I hope to get it 'write.'

http://www.thefiddlehead.ca/submissions.html I don't feel quite upto the caliber of writing this highly respected journal DEMANDS, but it is one of the best journals in Canada (wonder what some of my fellow Canucks might say of this? Hmmm?) They pay $40 per page, so 40 smackaroos for a poem, but it better well be your creme de creme... It has been around for decades and getting published with them puts more than a feather in your hat, it will signal to other editors you are a professional and worthy of careful consideration. They recommend 3-5 poems per submission. xox Dee

One thing I learned when I took my fiction writing course, and this also applies to poetry, perhaps MORE SO, if you subscribe to a magazine then you have a better chance of being published in its pages. It's just the lay of the land...because you'll be more familiar with what the mag likes, is looking for and appreciates...xox

Debbie I am already in four poetry groups that encourage, guide and give critique to every member, I would like to join this one but time or home life does not allow it....and there are better poets than me here..

Hey, Bet, Good on you!! Way to put the pedal to the metal. I am also, as you know, working on a project. I do not write on the weekends, as I spend this time with my family. I'd have liked to join your group, but I'm already over-committed. I think a small writer's group dedicated towards publication is a phenomenal idea and I wish you all the best! If I find any leads though, hon, I'll make sure to send them your way to share with the group. Most of the publications I'm seeing in my area are of acedemic, lovely glossies, a chance at publication, but they do not pay. I'm attracted to Quill, a poetry journal, and after my project, may submit some work to them. xxox
