Chris's anti-Christmas & Turkey blog really struck home for me. Since I'm alone most of the time, I really don't enjoy these holidays anymore. I have decided this year to more or less give up sending cards [seems like most folks gave up years ago & this year I haven't the funds for all that postage..best put somewhere else!]

I am going to start today researching where HELP is needed. And I will post here places where Christmas is REALLY missing..actually its missing all year long. KINDNESS is missing, FOOD is missing, SHELTER is missing IF every Christian [and of course folks of other faiths] stopped giving so much EXTRA to their own families and gave to the POOR instead, that would be a Christ Mass...Jesus would be happy with aye? Ipads, Iphones, computer games GOODNESS...folks have NO JOBS..no food...Let's see if we can come up with lists of places to send our extra 5 cents, 5 dollars etc to?

Please DO send me the links YOU find and I will post them here.

I love Christmas and my greatest joy is giving to others. Hope you don't mind, but I don't want to feel guilty about taking my hard earned pension from the year and splurging on my very grateful, (small) family once a year. I believe that we can give in many ways, and sometimes a loving shoulder can mean as much as money. I provide to our Salvation Army here in Canada who provide such tremendous support to anyone, including clothes, meals and spiritual support for free. They sit and ring bells at our grocery store each year and have a thrift store in our town. We provide all our gently worn clothes and furnishings to them also. I choose to give all year not just at holiday season.

Hi Debbie, I hear you and I understand that holiday times for all faiths can be trying for those who are alone, however, but anytime can be lonely. Rather than choosing holiday time to give, I try to do that all year long by volunteering two days/week with dying people. (contd)

There are other systems which care for their citizens, such as the Parlimentary Democracy or the UK or the Constitutional Monarchy of Denmark and Canada, these are free countries where people work just as hard as here, sell, trade & still do a better job helping those in need, the young, the aged and both of these group are HIGH on the list of who's poor in the USA

So true Carrie..capitalizm really feeds so many negative fires, gluttony, greed, envy, jealousy, pride geeez when is enough enough? We need to rewrite..the concept of A GOOD LIFE...a good life is solely about who has the biggest or the most or the newest RIGHT?

PS. With the loss of a loved one just two weeks ago....it has become more apparent what is important, more than ever. To make this holiday more about wrapping each other in love and kindness, helping one another, reaching out as others have reached out to us. The madness of shopping and spending have taken such a back seat, when there are so many better ways to spread the joy. Thanks for the blog, Debbie

For several years, our big, extended family would gather for what we call 2nd Christmas, and exchange gifts..which with over 21 people, was ridiculous,a poor example to our children with much unecessary loot, even with a money limit, too much mindless spending for presents. Finally we decided instead to bring an envelope with a set amount of money..(small amounts for the kids, larger amounts for the adults. We then write a favorite charity on a slip of paper, and toss those into a hat.The kids draw out one slip of paper, and that year,we donate this money to whatever charity it says. One year it might be the diabetes foundation, another year, may be the food bank and so on.This makes everyone happy!

Great blog, Debs!! Sad that you didn't go off for a Thanksgiving meal, but you're invited to a Christmas meal if you feel like it. Forget the gifts, having you here had been a treasure in itself.:) Meg won't be here, hoping Nate will be, and dang it, Nick is always working on that day. Kiwi's here though..LOL I'm sure she can read my mind, she just barked downstairs and she's on her way up! I love giving to the charities and food banks...I'm sure it brightens up the lives of others. Here they have the gingolay..something like that, and they come door to door for donations. I like the thrift stores, but I wasn't aware that the funds collected go to help others. Oops, no more space..Love you!

Wonderful blog, Debbie! You are so right. I don't think Jesus takes much pleasure in the way his birth is celebrated these days. He would much prefer us to reach out in love to those in need. After all, Jesus did say that whatever we do for others, we do for him as well. (my paraphrase) Love, Kim
