My latest Tribute Contest list posted: Celebrating Carolyn's Poetry - Andrea Dietrich's Blog

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held). Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. I was very pleasantly surprised that nearly all the poems chosen as favorites written by Carolyn were completely different. If I am not mistaken, only one of Carolyn's poems got chosen twice, so there is a great mix of forms and themes to be found among the winners of my "uncontest." I hope you will take some free time to peruse the list and see for yourselves the scope of Carolyn's writing. From footles, haiku or limericks - to rhyme or free verse, she had at least a little bit of everything.

I spent last week trying to view as many of the examples of Carolyn's poetry as chosen by my contestants as I was able to track down. I surprised myself because I ended up seeing almost ALL of them before closing out the contest when I had supposed I'd only seen read half of them. Therefore, I did not really need to write many comments to my winners today! Thanks so much to all who contributed. It was a great pleasure of mine to view the world through the eyes of my sweet poet friend, Carolyn Devonshire, through reading the poems YOU were most affected by!

Andrea, have been reading more of the poems by Carolyn, & your sorrow at not catching her vm in time...I share your grief with my own "what if's...& know we both have much support here encouraging us to "let go, let God" fill us with His Grace as we spread love to all we encounter, this would make Carolyn happy...

oh good, I see you came back. Sorry it made you so sad, James. Never be embarrassed to show the real you!!! I miss my friends who have passed away (there have been several poet friends now) but knowing they are in a better place makes it easier for me to deal with the loss. My dear brother Dale, who died much too early, and my friends and relatives who passed - I will be seeing them all when I die. I am very sure of that. Thanks so much for contributing to the contest.

Andrea, thank you so much for doing this contest. I think it was important to Carolyn's poetic friends to pay tribute to her and express their feelings. I am sure that Carolyn would be very proud with these tribute's to her and thank you for selecting my entry as a uncontest winner. I selected a poem Carolyn wrote about her true love who also died of cancer years ago and in the poem she wishes to follow him into the sea and now she has. Lovers united. thanks for the contest Andrea, its a lovely tribute to Carolyn. I have to admit I found it difficult to enter especially as I would usually seek permission from a poet to use their work, i think others found it hard too. hugs Jan xx

The way I looked at it, Jan,Carolyn's poems were aleady here at Soup to be viewed by all, so it's not needful to seek permission if we are simply showcasing our favorites. We do that all the time when we show poems of deceased poets at blogs. I guess I just think differently than you. Who knows. Maybe others felt like you. I do not know.
