Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Rest in Peace, Carolyn

Blog Posted:8/4/2021 7:22:00 AM

As Sara's blog indicates below, Carolyn passed away from cancer very recently. Either last night or early this morning. Jack Horne had been in close contact with a relative of hers in Florida. Carolyn had informed a close group of friends that she was dying last month, so some of us are not in shock but are very sad to know she is gone. She had been suffering for months with horrible symptoms for which she got no answers until right around the time of her birthday last July. I want everyone to know how generous she was, how thoughtful she was to her friends, and how scared she was to learn that her strange coughing, constant fever and horrible time breathing all led to a death sentence which meant eventual hospice care in the last several weeks of her life.

Toward the end, Carolyn did not want people to know what was happening, but she worried that people would find her rude for not commenting back to them, so please know she was feeling bad about that, and I told her nobody would fault her for that. I and others were told to not mention her condition, so it's been hard for me to keep quiet this whole time. I had wanted to do a prayer blog for her, but she had told me specifically not to do that, and so at last we can all pay tribute to her now. I know that Carolyn is now at peace and has found sweet relief from her suffering.

Carolyn did a lot in her life, and was a great inspiration to the many poets here at PoetrySoup. I hope everyone will read her poetry and realize the much good that she did here. What an amazing friend you were, Carolyn. You will be greatly missed.

Here is a bio poem she did of herself years ago. I hope we can reflect on Carolyn's wonderful nature by reading this poem of how she described herself. Forgive the formatting. I need to rush off for work and I am sure the poem's lines are not with the correct line breaks, but I needed to quickly get this up and go to work. THIS is our Carolyn:

           Fearless or Foolish

Life is confusing sometimes
At least it has been for me
I was Mom’s “change of life” baby
two siblings far older change in the birth certificate
three days spent as Marilyn
then I became Carolyn
not many toys in our city home
so I started jumping off things graduated from steps to trees
then my preference changed to roofs
fearless always, perhaps foolishly so
but I sensed my limitations
at three I was standing on my head spinning like a top,
ran faster, jumped higher than boys on my block
walked tall on stilts, bounced on my pogo-stick around the block
hid my frog “Pierre” in the garage acrobat lessons for eight years (Hurray!) but Mom wanted to make a lady of me
ballet didn’t change this tomboy
went to the state spelling championship
but at age 12, I couldn’t spell “murmur”
and the oddest books I read as a child:
“Lincoln the Unknown” “How to Stop Worrying and Start Living” Jacque Cousteau’s “Silent World”
traded my pig tails for mini skirts
cheerleading for the high school football team
still love the sport today
recruited by the ice hockey coach to teach boys how to skate backward recruited by the boys’ gymnastics coach to flip and vault
as team members scowled
captain of my college speech and debate team
first freshman to win the Peace Oratory contest judged by Princeton University professors writing has supported me all of my life
from high school to the present
first a copywriter, then a journalist
humorous verse is my favorite some family members say I’m a “wit” They’re only half right :D

(I really butchered her poem's format since the system does not allow it to be copied and pasted the way it appears on her wall. To see it correctly formatted, here is the link): https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/fearless_or_foolish_607966

This is tragic news, my condolences to her family, friends and loved ones. She was an excellent poetess and helped me out many times to improve in my writing style and spelling. She seems like a caring individual, and I'm sure she will be missed. Thanks Andrea for posting this. So many deaths the last year or so, hard to take sometimes.

Andrea, I am so sad to hear of the loss of our dear and beautiful friend, Carolyn. Carolyn grew up just a few miles away from where I live now. We had often talked about getting together when she came to visit her family here in NJ, but unfortunately our timings where poor. She was such a lovely and sweet person whom I always adored. She will be missed by so many. My heart goes out to her and her family and friends. R.I.P. Carolyn (my heart bleeds) Love, Charlie

Such sad news to find this morn. She was indeed a very kind soul, a fine poet and one that encouraged me greatly when I first arrived at this site. I shall miss her and her wonderful poetry. Such as she always makes a person see the good in this world. May she rest in peace and know she touched so many lives in a wonderful and positive way.

Thank you for this wonderful tribute for Carolyn Andrea. She was indeed a special lady. I so enjoyed reading her bio poem. Thank you for posting it. It saddens me that Carolyn never got to visit me as she had planned because of the pandemic. I conversed with her through email a day or so before she passed away. The last words I said to her were I love you with a heart. She wrote me back and told me she was too weak to receive any more emails and I totally understood and I prayed for her to become free of her pain. Contd.

gosh, I had stopped emailing her in July when she wrote that farewell note. Then I just did text messages but I stupidly was texting her home number and realized it a week before she died and then I sent her texts to her cell. I hope she read them. but I'll never know.

Like a few, I'm rarely here, and I only knew by reading a post by Charmaine on Facebook. Sad day for me as we were close away back when I joined the Soup, and Carolyn along with some other terrific poets brought my writing along immensely. If it weren't for Carolyn, I'd have never got to where I am with my writing, sweet everlasting dreams Miss Devonshire xxxx

Oh, what sad news this is ... such an ebullient and irrepressible spirit. Rest In Peace, Carolyn ... you were one of the first people to appreciate my poetry and encourage me - I will never forget that or your kind, supportive personality. The angels add another angel to their ranks, and we will see the sun rise a wee bit colder on the morn. :o( <3 ( I had to update this cuz the captcha I got when posting was "CAR" - I think she's still with us, and always will be )

Her passing brings to mind a conversation I had with my dad before he died. He said the dying part was easy to come to grips with, it was the thought of leaving those he loved behind that was the problem. I am almost certain Carolyn would have said the same. May God have mercy on her soul.

It's great to be a tomboy . I was one too. I was thinking the end for Carolyn was very near just last night and I even think I did a final text late last night to her. I knew she could not answer my texts and to this day, I do not know if she was reading the ones I wrote since she became incapacitated, but I hoped I was bringing her a bit of comfort with them. I am working on a memorial page now before I leave the school. If not for you and Jack, I would not even have known she had passed. Thanks, Sara. ( I can't figure out the funeral page)

thanks, Brandy. She has a brother Artie, whom I should have mentioned that she wants people to pray for. He was able to visit her in July even though he is on oxygen and it was difficult for him to travel to her. Other than that brother and a few others who did not live close by, she really had nobody at the end to be there in Florida with her. That is so sad to me.

yes, Tom, that is the consolation. She was suffering terribly . My last conversation with her was heartbreaking, in the first or second week of July. She could not get enough oxygen to speak clearly. I know the great pain she was in and she wanted death to come. That is what people need to know. In these times, death is relief. If my cancer were to return with a vengeance, I would pray for swift death

They are true treasures and a living legacy for all of us who loved her. She welcomed me to the soup, encouraged me, inspired me to grow. I loved her contest themes. We would occasionally soup mail. Andrea, I am heartbroken since I heard the news. I am honored that she considered me in her close circle of friends, so I knew she was dying of cancer but kept my promise to not speak of it. Now, I can. She was courageous, kind, and generous and a wonderful friend to me since 2008. She loved nature and the ocean, she lived close to it and would never move even though her house was damaged many times from hurricanes and tornados. Her last poem written was for a contest of mine and her poetry is beautiful. Rest in Peace my Friend, fly away now, up and up till you reach Heaven ~ Love always _Constance
