TO READ CLICK ON THE + BUTTON. I am a writer of poetry I come from a family of storytellers and this has helped me in my poetry. I have been writing since I could pick up a pen. Have written in all forms and won many, many contests with my poetry.  My poetry has been featured in lots of books.  I have created my own forms that are often used by poets worldwide. And I have extensivley studied the poems of old, the writers forms, word use, punctuation, rhyming and layout.  I have taken some Writing Classes and have been told over and over, I am a born poet, something that can never be taught.  Have been part of several poetry clubs locally. I have helped poets to edit their poems and helped them to improve their presentation. My own poems are quite often sad. I write of death and grief. You could say I write "graveyard poetry." And I write about experiences in my life, to complications of the world,  and not afraid to share my soul. But, I can and do write happy if I want to, and I love to write of nature and poems on spiritual introspective themes, sometimes I even write of romance. And people who know me, will verify that I like using quotes in my poetry and I enjoy writing for contest themes on Poetry Soup. I joke that I can make any theme sad. I enjoy sponsoring my own contests on Poetry since 2008 and have sponsored hundreds and hundreds of contests. I left the site for a brief time in 2011, removing all my poetry when my Muse went missing, but, after a near death experience returned later in 2012 and just picked up where I left off. I love art, all classical music, researching all things, nature, gardening, meditation, praying, peace and tranquility.  I collect books of all kinds, dictionaries, poetry books, art, even cookbooks,  I adore vintage jewelry, colored glass, and dishes.  I adore the creaking, moaning old building where I live with my Snuggles Kitty Cat and a few mice.

Ten poems that define me as a poet . . . (from thousands)

1. The Dream Lingers https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/the_dream_lingers_408612 This poem was written after a near death experience, it stills haunts me, I could hear my mother calling me.

2. Safe In My Heart Forever https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/safe_in_my_heart_forever_549494 My mother was my anchor, the wings beneath my feet and my best friend, I miss her so very much.

3. Tattered Pages https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/tattered_pages_688344 At the end of the poem, a baby born, died and I was told he was adopted, my parents lied.

4. Dad's Workshop https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/dads_workshop_714811 I wrote this poem in 1997 but only posted it when I was posting on poetrysoup- it is about Dad.

5. Beautiful Scars https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/beautiful_scars_735565 This poem gives you just a small glimpse of the pain and grief I carry with me every single day.

6. And That Comes From Within https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/and_that_comes_from_within_1127173 My health is not that good, never has been and never will be, and no money will change my outcome.

7. in my green dream https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/in_my_green_dream_762889 I love this poem, dreamy and spiritual, I am all about nature in this one, come on a green journey.

8. A Lost Feather https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/a_lost_feather_783977 This poem is very meaningful to me, it speaks of my Ojibwe roots and of my ancestors in the sky.

9. "Kindness is the Key" https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/kindness_is_the_key_848785 When awful things happen to us in life it is easy to become mean and resentful but kind is better.

10. I Write Fragments https://www.poetrysoup.com/poem/i_write_fragments_1243058 This poem sums up my journey in writing, fragments, snippets that drip, drip from my pen and mostly at night.

Words, words, do yours have style ?

Blog Posted:1/29/2020 4:59:00 PM

I am sure most poets are like me and have words that they love and use frequently in their poetry, my catologue of favorite words is quite vast.  Since forever it seems, I have been collecting dictionaries, all kinds, and years, old, tattered and yellowed, brand new, thesaurus vast,, dictionaries of quotes,  birds, flowers, rocks, you name it, if there is a dictionary for it, I am attracted to it.  Like an artist paints a picture with brushes and color, we paint a picture with our words, so the correct choice will set the mood. I think words give a poem its tone and the use of certain words speaks of your style of writing.

Questions,

Do your word selections create your style ?

Do you use an online dictionary and thesaurus or the book form of dictionary, etc?

For me it is the book form always, I must feel the pages, and I find the choice of words are better and more extensive.

My friend, I write what heart and soul speaks. I do so in a simpler way as did one of my favorite poets-Frank Libby Stanton. A famous poet that wrote to-and- for, the masses. I favor rhyme but see the merits of free verse as well. I do not and never will adhere to strict form over that of creativity, originality and quality message in poetry. Modern poetry shall never match that of the golden poetry of old, imho. My two cents worth... Great blog...

Robert, thanks for the compliment on my blog, I like rhyme and free verse but like to try other forms, I think that they are like putting puzzles together, but I agree some are just too restrictive to be truly creative _Constance

I do not have favorite words or phrases. I just go with the words that best fit my meter and meaning. I had an awesome rhyming book but it got in tatters, so now i just use the one online. Thesaurus as well. however,I do it on cell phone while lying on my bed writing in pen!! I think people use the styles that fit with the type of form they are using! nice blog, Dear heart. I am at public library to catch up on things while my internet is down. Hopefully I can get to a lot of comments right now!!

Andrea, that is too bad that your internet is down, I went to the library lots when I was having computer issues, here in Canada they have a one hour limit, so hard to get much done. I have a rhyming book but it does not agree with Rhymezone which everyone on here seems to like, so I seldom use it, I always write my poems in pen first, then post them and thanks for the compliment _Constance

I do have favorite words and phrases which I try not to overuse.I do not use a dictionary nor do I use a Thesaurus. I try to use common words that people already know. Uncommon words or big words can make understanding difficult. i have from time to time made up my own words but usually just when I'm trying to get a laugh. I think my style is very recognizable.

Daniel, I like it when people write in words everyone can understand and we do not have to run for the dictionary to figure out what they meant, made up words are fun, it makes me think of EE Cummings, he loved to make up words too_Constance

Constance, thanks for another fun and interesting blog! I definitely tend to write poems that rhyme more than any type of poem. I do have the same themes often. I do use rhyme zone and a thesaurus as well. I love to write about birds, nature and the seasons!

Tania, thanks for the compliment. I seem to like rhyme, free verse and verse but of course write in other forms for contests, I use rhymezone and howmanysyllables to verify, as it seems those are the ones acceptable to most contest sponsors, I like the PS grammar checker also as it will identify spelling errors, grammar, and other aspects of the poem that could make it read better _Constance

Great blog Constance, yep, my style puts emphasis on meter, rhyme and understandability, therefore virtually my whole poetry lexicon uses simple one or two syllable conversational words that arent unusual or fantastic. Occasionally slip an interesting word in but rarely. I only use online dictionary ... im lazy.

Lewis, thanks for the compliment on my blog. I like simple words too, but find a unique word sometimes to use and that is fun, I like reference books, dictionary and thesaurus, I just find that journey of searching through them for the words I want to use is more poetic than the on line version but that's just me, on line is a very handy tool _Constance
Date: 1/30/2020 3:10:00 PM
It's weird how I always use only the online dictionary, even though I own at least 3 dictionaries that I know of, and one of them is a GIANT Random House Dictionary! Go figure, lol. I don't have a specific word that I use frequently in my poems, but I have two favorite themes(romance & nature)...not to mention, my own signature style/form(Yalto)

Edward, I love your created form Yalto, and well, 3 dictionaries ? I have many more than that, I will not say because people will think I am a nut, well maybe they do think that already and those are two great themes, on line dictionaries for me are too limited, but that is just my opinion _Constance

I like the term wordsmith, as in one who polishes and shapes each word to fit seamlessly into the poetic puzzle. However discovering a new word every now and then ain't such a bad thing.

John, I agree how we use the words is more important than the word. And always seeking new words is part of our poetic journey _Constance
Date: 1/30/2020 10:08:00 AM
All writers whether or not they're aware, have favorite words/themes/styles that are their signature. I often, but not always catch myself, in some way, echoing what I have written before. I used to, but seldom look up "new" words anymore because if I have to look it up many others will have to as well, and if they must, it will destroy much of the flow and detract from the message. Temptfully presented ambiguities and creative presentation...in other words (no pun), the artful paring of words we already know (I believe) can produce the best results. We already write too much of what only fellow poets can comprehend without complicating to a more obscure level, but then, who is our audience.

Craig, interesting comment, I agree some poets do not even realize their fav words but use them over and over. Some poets have such a distinct style, I think I am such a poet and when I write a poem not in my style, people say" that is so different for you" _Constance

One of my favorite movie lines (not sure from which movie) from Errol Flynn and his awesome compliment "My dear you shouldn't wear earrings, why embellish perfection". Yes, we should go back to the mirror, but too much can detract - not add.
Date: 1/29/2020 10:44:00 PM
Oh, I LOVE words! Old words, new words, slang words, archaic words, foreign words, beautiful words, ugly words, light words, dark words ... I try to learn a new word each day and use it three times, (not always successfully, lol), and yes, I DO lean towards favorites, though I try to circulate those as well ... I also try to LIMIT my words, and after I write a piece I go over it again and again, and keep removing the unnecessary, (which is hard sometimes, because I love words so much). People think I love big words, and I DO, but only for their beauty and meaning, and I do NOT like it when writers simply plug in words from Thesaurus to impress and use incorrect context - MANY folks do that.

Greg, you named some of the dictionaries I have on my shelf. I used to have a calendar where it gave a new word each day, that was fun, as I would try to use that word in a poem, yes I agree editing a poem of the unnecessary is difficult to do, sometimes a beautiful line or word that does not fit, I will jot down to perhaps use in another poem, and yes the thesaurus although a handy tool can be overused for the sake of having many words, I think sometimes I am guilty of that, but trying to be more aware __Constance

I am not one to search for words, like in a Dictionary or a Thesaurus. I place simple words with my poetry. Every once and a while, I'll throw a smart word in. Like from the Thesaurus. I am simple in my thinking. That's my style. I am enjoying this journey of writing Lyric poems. With my poetry, I feel every moment and every emotion while writing. I just do. My heart is in every word. ~ Brandy

Justin, in my opinion a sexy poem can be quite sensual by using words that are suggestive but not exactly sex words, to me that is the skill of a writer, to pick the right words to relay a sexy poem without sexual words _Constance
