Absolutely!! If no one else is doing it at open mics, all the MORE reason for you to do so! I will leave the rest to a (partial) favorite quote: “We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race. And the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, LOVE, these are what we stay alive FOR! That the powerful play *goes on* and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be? ? N.H. Kleinbaum, Dead Poets Society" Be an unapologetic warrior for love, (as I am) ... others WILL follow! :-)

Great reply, I agree wholeheartedly my friend. My previous reply made here, tho' is a bit more cynical in regards to romantic poetry, its current sad state and that of poetry in general.

Can anyone really UNDERSTAND LOVE? What is love? So many writes about, films about, books about, did all these solve the mystery of love, and yes, love is not romantic only, the love of an object, an animal or even love for a God. I do write about love but I always seem to put some negativity in it. Then of course there is that unique love. The love of oneself!

Yes & No - Like all else there are soppy, like eating 5 Hershey bars and there are those that draw a tear. That is why when any artist tackles the "Usual" they must make it new. Over a hundred years ago someone said that everything that had to be invented had already been invented. That wasn't true then and will never be - the same for art/songs/poems/books/movies etc - same subject - new presentation "A Star is Born" new emotion and fresh tears. Age old truths.

Could be that romanticism is not in vogue as once it was. This modern world , people meet, hook-up for a short , one night fling and then go on their own way. Our modern cultures do not value the same things as once were. Romance poetry suffers from the blindness and fallen nature of modern culture, IMHO.

My friend, I have and do. I wrote a romantic sonnet yesterday, have not yet posted it here. I have at least 200 poems written since I joined here that I have never posted here. A great of them many are romantic sonnets..

I try to mix classic poetry with new and fresh technique, and hopefully reach a younger crowd that still appreciates true romance ... it may not work, but at least we're trying, Brother! :-)

I agree here, Robert, absolutely ... romanticism is not what it was, but if nothing else, we can "go down swinging", and do our best, through the artistic endeavors, to renew it and keep it thriving! I believe there is a contingent of young people who still believe in it, but maybe they don't see and hear enough of it from US, those who came before ... let's do our best to give it a revival.

Such is the eventual harvesting of bitter fruits when mankind seeks to sate his darker lusts and ever consuming greed and self pleasure, over that of decent morality and goodness. Reality bites but it is what it is my friend.

I find it hard to write romantic poems so I just write poop, at the open mike nights I've been to they are all humourists so they also tend not to do romantic lines just stuff to make people smile lol:-) hugs jan xx

It is very hard to write a good love poem that avoids cliches, because so many people have written about love before. And it is not "what poetry is all about". I write love poems. Posted a few just recently. It is very, very difficult to say something fresh. It is much easier to write about pretty much any other subject. I have seen love poems published and heard them at open mic, but they were subtle and did not mention the word "heart".
