Six-Word Poetry - Mark Toney's Blog

Happily married for over 44 years, having raised 2 sons, both married to girls named Carla.  Go figure. :)

"Glass is Empty" is my avatar.  It reflects a play on words with my initials, as "Empty" becomes "MT" for my name, Mark Toney.  The glass represents my creative process.  The glass begins to fill as I work through the process of writing, becoming full when I complete a short story or poem.  After publishing the work, the glass becomes empty again, awaiting new inspiration.  Empty or full, the glass is always "MT" :)

Six-Word Poetry

Blog Posted:6/9/2018 12:10:00 PM

I’ve written poetry all my life.  Other than what I was taught in school almost half a century ago, I haven’t really paid attention to the structure of different types of poems until I joined PoetrySoup.  My less than 2 months with PoetrySoup has expanded my poetic universe by exposing me to many different types of poems, some of which I’ve added to my “soup.”  Over the last year I’ve also been intrigued by the “six-word story,” which has gained popularity, including the 2006 Six-Word Memoirs® project.

All of this exposure to different types and styles of writing has jumbled up my brain, prompting me to ask `what about a six-word poem?’  Is it an established type of poem?  Is there a name for such?  Depending on how it’s written, I know we can call it a “Rhyme” or “Free Verse,” etc.  But is there a specific type of poetry for a six-word poem?  Probably not, because the rhythm and meter would vary depending on the number of syllable feet.  (Wow, I wouldn’t have been able to say that 2 months ago!)  Which bears asking, since it's not a footle, could it be a feetle?

If you can add anything to this discussion I would be most grateful.

For now, I’ll leave you with a feel-good quote:

William Faulkner said:
“I'm a failed poet. Maybe every novelist wants to write poetry first, finds he can't, and then tries the short story, which is the most demanding form after poetry. And, failing at that, only then does he take up novel writing.”

So fellow poets, feel good!  William Faulkner said poetry is the most demanding form. :)

Cheers!

Nothing feeble about your poem, Wayne. Your 6-word tribute to Charlie speaks volumes. Thank you for sharing it with us. Love and God's comfort to you and your dear family.

Our local paper ran a six word story and gave Hemingway's as an example (for sale: Baby shoes, never worn) You can say so much in six words.I suppose its a western hakiu. Tom

I can’t help on the classification Mark... but maybe you should run a 6 word story contest. That would be an interesting challenge!

Six is a no no number in the Bible. Seven is muy bueno. How about a seven word poem? My entry - The rain in Spain is... rather tepid

@Mark here's an idea - why stop at a one line sixer? Go for the gold with a triple six

Research wasn't necessary. My replies are meant to expand your awesome joke lol --- "little baby ducks": it's already implied that ducklings are diminutive in size, so, "little baby ducks" is an example of writing that uses unnecessary modifiers, as "ducklings" is fine to use. Another example is: "little baby bunny rabbits" (look familiar to you?). Bunnies are rabbits, and baby bunnies (kits) are little, so, "kits" would help to pare down four words into one (or "baby rabbits" for two words), and the readers will use their brains to fill in the obvious fact that kits/baby rabbits are small creatures.

*cont'd* -- After 6 days, Jesus took Peter, James, and John up the mountain for the Transfiguration (Mt 17:1)(Mk 9:2). In the 6th month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary to announce she would give birth to Jesus (Lk 1:26:36). In Jesus' first miracle, he changed 6 waterpots into wine (Jn 2:6-10). Mary anointed Jesus' feet 6 days before Passover (Jn 12:1-3). When Peter received his vision from God opening the door to the Gentiles, it was the 6th hour (Acts 10:9). ---- There are many other examples.

Hullo Thomas. 6 isn't attributed only negative qualities; 6 has many positive attributes connected to it in the bible: The Earth and all things were created in 6 days (Gen 1:31-2:2)(Ex 20:11)(Ex 31:17). The Israelites were to gather Manna for 6 days (Ex 16:5,22,29). The 6th Commandment is "thou shalt not murder" (Ex 20:13)(Deut 5:17). A Hebrew slave was only to work 6 years and then be released (Ex 21:2)(Deut 15:12.18)(Jer 34:14). The glory of the Lord covered Mt. Sinai for 6 days (Ex 24:16). The gold lampstand in the Tabernacle (which signified Jesus) had 6 branches coming out of it (Ex 25:32-35)(Ex 37:17-21).

Thank you for your comments, July Morning. I appreciate your example. FYI - At Isaiah chapter 6, the Seraphim standing above God each had 6 wings. So sometimes 6 is ok ;)

I would suggest the answer is a 6 word Monoku which features a single line consisting of seventeen syllables or even fewer. Here is a 7 word Monoku by Daniel Turner => Hearts of gold don't break, they melt.

Hi Tony.. I do not know of an exact form that 6 word poetry is called but to me they usually read as quotes so perhaps depending on the theme could be posted as Carp Diem or maybe monokus ..
