ENTITLED OR WHAT? a spin off

Blog Posted:4/11/2018 2:45:00 AM

To follow up yesterday's blog below,in the absence of notes to aid understanding ,the 'title' can be quite significant it would seem...and yet very few poetry teaching guides ever touch on this aspect of our artform.

How much consideration do you give to titles?  do they come easily to you  from the context?Do they indeed come before you complete the verse? Are they an afterthought for you?or are they in reality an integral line of the poem itself.(,they are of course with many short forms such as my footle form)

Generally for me they come later, after completion, and required some thought as here one needs a title to be able to post the poem, and this site is my chosen place for my anthology.

AFTERTHOUGHT

Of course, prior to the net many poets that I read often used the word 'untitled' to some of their offerings!

I know that I need to put more work into my titles. I never titled my poems before, but since PoetrySoup requires a title, my titles are often an afterthought and not integral art of the poem. This is something I have started working on.

I am usually extremely picky about my titles as 1) a clever title sure goes a long way to attracting readers, but even more important to me, 2) a clever title contributes to the poem sometimes immensely on the 1-10 scale. It nearly kills me not to title haikus... so I prefer to call them modern haikus... Besides, I have a hard time saying to someone 'Do you remember that poem I wrote, it was called UNTITLED?' Thanks Brian, for a most interesting blog.

Thanks Line,I often use numbers as titles for my shorter forms when into a series thereof, which I am at present.

I think same as you do about haiku. Nice comment, Line.

The title is half the poem for me, or at least a good part of it. At times the poem begins with the title, others it leads me to the title. Interesting blog as always Brian. Cheers

Thanks Maureen,I agree. The title is worth some thought ,especially here as it can draw folk into viewing the poem.

Yep, the title for me is more of an afterthought, as simple as can be.
