Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

Please Pray for Carolyn & Others in Peril

Blog Posted:9/6/2017 3:31:00 PM

I am leaving work now but wanted to post this up quickly. I just got word from Carolyn Devonshire that the hurricane in Florida is headed toward her town. She is feeling alone and terrified right now. She says she is right on a beach, and though the storm is not there yet, it's expected tomorrow, with the force of the winds being extremely high. She fears her house could be utterly destroyed. She says there is no shelter for the people of her county (for today). They are telling her they will have "designated places" to go to tomorrow. I do not understand very well the conditions in that area. I don't know how many others here at Soup are living in the path of this monstrous storm. But please pray for their safety, and if anyone knows about PD or others in Texas or elsewhere in the Gulf who may have been affected last week by the flooding, please can you let me know?

Of course, natural disasters are happening all over the world. All those left homeless or in peril deserve our prayers and any donations we can give the Red Cross. I appreciate my local grocery store Smith's taking donations for victims of the flood and I know many local businesses are doing these kinds of things. Bless those who can give any bit they can for disaster relief all over this world.

I believe Carolyn is going to be ok. She is now worried about those north of her though there are still high winds and storms in her area. Those in nearby states, our prayers are with you.

I'm glad Carolyn has a souper to turn to for comfort and security. That's great news. I hope that they will be safe. I can't even begin to imagine what the conditions are like for those who have to deal with this natural disaster. Wishing them all safety. Thanks for letting us know, Andrea.

Carolyn has found a safe haven with another Soup member 50 miles inland. that is something very nice!!!

But she's much safer in Ocala than over by Daytona---those barrier islands are going to be bad with storm surge and I would rather be center state than on the coast. My Mom is on the west coast north of Tampa. Frederic is just north of Tampa (not good) and Robert Stoner lives just north of Tampa--many soupers in harms way I fear & of course, millions of others.

Catie, now she is saying the eye of the storm could end up being at Robert's place?? (what a horrible situation to be in, for all the state of Florida and the other regions north of FL that will also be affected.)

One of the most interesting and trusted models is on ventusky.com--go there and press play on the bottom left and it predicts the hurricane's path which is up the east coast. There is still much to learn but it doesn't look good and note that there is another hurricane following Irma. The islands in the caribbean are getting destroyed.

Carolyn, Irma is the circulation that is just north of Santo Domingo --when you press play it gives you an hour by hour path--note that there is another circulation behind it (Jose). ABC news has now projected an east coast path as well but the intensity will weaken as it goes north---even so, you do not live in a safe place. Watch carefully!

Look below AD---Carolyn is up by Daytona, but in a vulnerable location near the water even if the storm is weakening--still will be bad with storm surge. Carolyn, not sure who oyur internet server is but it appears the storm will turn north up the east coast. Keep an eye on it on local news--if you have friends inland, go there by Sunday.

Craig, I tried ventusky and did not see anything about Irma there. When i pressed "play," the screen of Florida just showed what appeared to be light rain. How do I find Irma?

it's really sad about the islands, craig. I keep forgetting the town Carolyn lives in. I need to call her again and see how she's doing.

You have my prayers Carolyn. My father was vacationing in Miami and him and his new wife just cut their vacation short and left immediately to NY. If you could leave take a flight, train whatever you can and get out of there. I wish you the best. God be with you. Thanks Andrea for posting.

Michael, I'm glad your father evacuated quickly. The storm will be very strong when it hits there. Former Soup member Robert Dufresne and his wife Gail live about 70 miles inland in Ocala Florida. They have offered to let me stay with them when the hurricane hits our area. Thanks for your prayers, Michael. Much appreciated.

I wish she would just GO. But she has her reasons, Michael.
Date: 9/6/2017 9:24:00 PM
won't know if it will hit me until sat, it will either turn east or it won't...then I'll know...Not sure what part of my state Carolyn is in I hope it's not on the east coast, I'm on the west...even if it turns still going to get tropical winds...sending prayers to Carolyn, if she is on the east coast she needs to evacuate, there are not a lot of roads so the traffic will be bad the longer she waits

Yes Frederic, it appears it may go up the middle of the state but Carolyn is better off in Ocala than on a barrier Island which is sure to be flooded and it is likely to creep back east ---no matter, it is a devil of a storm. Stay safe my friend.

Hi Frederic, I'm on the east coast in Ormond Beach, just above Daytona. I might evacuate to Ocala as I have a couple friends there who invited me. As you know, it's 70 miles inland. I'm half a block from the beach. Stay safe, Frederic !

Thanks for the prayers, everyone. The hurricane will not be here tomorrow, but conditions will start to deteriorate. It's hard to know the timeline. Irma is moving much faster than Harvey. Some of the donations Floridians were sending to Texas have been held back for victims here. It's so sad that multiple states need the help. Prayer is good. I prayed through Matthew last year and had only one broken window. My neighbor's roof was in my yard! And Matthew as not as strong as Irma. I'm hoping the county will have shelters tomorrow. Right now we are being told Irma is actually strengthening again. To say I'm afraid is an understatement, but I'm relying on faith to see me through.

If there's any silver lining to be found in all this, it's my understanding that by the time Irma hits Florida it will have been downgraded to Category 3. But perhaps only the northern part of the state; I don't know where Carolyn lives. The only poet I know of in TX impacted by Harvey, though apparently to a lesser degree, is Chris Green. Prayers sent!

When I said, "only the northern part of the state", I meant that that's the only place that could be seriously impacted by the hurricane. Depending upon where Carolyn lives lets hope she escapes with only the minor-est of damage, if any. We'll just have to wait and see. We won't know anything before the weekend, earliest. The path of the storm is uncertain at this point.
