One important thing this author left out is what IMMEDIATELY gets you thrown out of the running - not following submission/contest directions [even with only one rule ..say write a sonnet, 25% of all entries will get tossed because they are not sonnets]

again about form IF we allow any form in the contest which most of the judges often do, it IS hard to judge apples against oranges,

all these-- check!.. i also judge based on the FLOW of the poem's content.. typo errors may be forgivable ( my typing i terrible)-- that's the reason i ask for names in my contest.. i want to clarify the meaning of a phrase or word.. greeat one, roy!

I like this - I especially liked the part about form, judging the form for what it is and not comparing it to others - that would surely make the playing field even.

Roy, when I was serving as a poetry editor for shadowpoetry and also one of the three judges at the annual ShadowInk and itty bitty contests, we used similar criteria. We reduced it to 5 categories that included pretty much the same basics as you've shown here. One of those categories was "judge's personal opinion" but the other categories were structure/ imagery/ figurative language/ cohesion/ etc. And even then, I was always WAY off from the other two judges on my very favorite ones. Often the ones I adored did not even pass muster with the other 2 judges; however, we all 3 would pick winners that were outstanding! I miss those days and the anonymity of it. We need that for contests here!!

I'm going to try it out. I will likely tweak the points a bit as I think certain criteria are more important than others. I have also come up with two more: 1. Adherence to contest rules. 2. Difficulty of form chosen. I think that when you allow any form in a contest, you should give more points to a form that requires more work than a simpler form. Just my opinion.

like haiku next to a sestina I'd say it's one of the hardest forms to write, 90% of the poets on soup are writing 3 line verse which is not haiku - so if I actually got a string of haiku that worked as poems and as haiku I'd be floored

:D I will save this to my files. This is awesome. I consider ALMOST all these aspects of poetry when I judge a contest, here. But I don't usually penalize a poet for a few spelling mistakes... I have a soft spot for this. My wonderful husband has dyslexia, a learning disorder. YET he is highly intelligent and can be very romantic, writing me love notes... This is just the way I see poetry, however, and don't judge the judge for discounting a poem due to a problem with syntax. For me, mood, imagery and words (oh, I've placed first over second here based on ONE word. Yup. The power of one word WOOS me) are what I look for. Next, the devices. And I sometimes cringe at clichés... though they are a part of the everyday vernacular, so, if a poem reads as more "conversational," I understand the use of the occasional cliché. Thanks for sharing this. Fantastic blog.
