About Andrea Dietrich

Bloggers Photo

Andrea Dietrich grew up in Iowa and now resides in Utah with a spouse and two cats. She has two grown children and six grandchildren. Having graduated BYU with a Spanish major/ESL minor, she has spent most of her adult life teaching. It wasn't until 2000 that she began writing in earnest and discovering her "niche" as a writer of lyrical poetry. The internet opened up a new world for her, and she has spent two decades now participating in poetry clubs, acting as a judge of poetry contests for various magazines, for the website Shadow Poetry, and for Poetry Soup.

Ms. Dietrich has won numerous awards, as well as the title Poet of the Year 2008, from the Yahoo group, Poetry For Thought. In addition, she has won prizes from the magazines Lucidity, Bell's Letters, Art with Words, Poets at Work and SP Quill, the magazine for which she wrote grammar and poetry articles as well as movie reviews and for which she acted as poetry editor for the head editor Marie Summers for six years. Many of her poems appeared in Shadows Ink, a yearly published series of chapbooks of award winning poetry as well as in numerous other anthologies. Her short stories appeared in many issues of SP Quill and much of her poetry was published in eight chapbooks (no longer sold online).

Since coming to Poetry Soup, Ms. Dietrich has been both contest sponsor and winner of numerous contests. In 2010, her poem "Cinder Girl" was first place winner of Soup's International contest (these contests are no longer held).  A song was created from her lyrics "Honeymoon Serenade" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDWxc4cpHDc) and two movies have been made featuring the poetry of Andrea Dietrich: "A Tale of Fire and Ice" (a 4 min. Z-Film Fest Project, 2014) and the full length movie "Six Days of Sistine" in which 20 poems of Ms. Dietrichs serve as the thoughts of two characters played by Jamie Campbell Bower and Elarica Johnson (directed by Richard J. Perry, 2019) https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7710360/

I Could Just Gag (A hodgepodge of stuff)

Blog Posted:2/24/2013 9:10:00 AM
My first hodgepodge item, nothing important, but just to let you know,I heard about making one's own "green smoothies' the other day. I was told: just thrown in lots of nutritious greens and add a bit of fruit to sweeten it up with agave if you want.

So I DID it. I got a whole bunch of spinach leaves (since I don't mind a spinach salad now and then). I saw collard greens next to the spinach in the store and I thought: Hmmm, that is one everyone always raves about as being so nutritious. So I got my blender out and squashed together big handfuls of spinach and collard greens. Added in celery and a cup of  pineapple chunks and some agave, HOLY CRAP I mean it's not as bad as some foods I have had, but what is that bitter taste? Is it the collard greens?. Next time I will leave that nasty stuff out and see if it improves!!

As you can tell, I do NOT like my veggies very much. But I thought i would think of a way to have a more healthful diet, and I am not sure smoothies will be my answer! Does anyone have a good suggestion for me of veggies that won't taste too nasty in a shake?

Item number two: I think my Tritina contest is ready to be judged. If not, it's close to being finished. So please check your poems over. I will try to at least read them finally. but probably it will be a while till I get to the judging.

FINAL item: the OSCARS: Does anyone have a favorite movie or actor they are rooting for? I have been able to predict correctly for 12 years running (one year I even predicted the tossup between Avatar and Hurt Locker). but this year I just have NO CLUE. There were so many good movies, I do not even have a clear favorite. I only know what will NOT win. I don't think Life of Pi, Django, and other less popular ones stand a chance. the big ones are advertising and I am sure it will come down to ones like Argo, Lincoln or Les Mis.

Well, I hope everyone has a GREAT SUNDAY. And hope you catch the Oscars tonight.

Collard greens and turnip greens have a very high acid content. They are for the sauerkraut type of person. Vegetables, well we were taught not to eat them growing up lol. I see you majored in Spanish, if you tried some of the regional food just to the southwest of us, calabaza, or squash is a great vegetable steamed, or even just sautéed in a little olive oil. It's even better fried, but that would defeat the purpose of eating healthy. Brocoli would be included if I ever even contemplated a green smoothie. You know another mexican favorite is carrot juice. Liquified pure carrot juice. I know I've seen a smoothie where the have that and then add some green vegetables. I should poeting lol.

thanks, way, no wonder I hated the horrid collard greens

I watched Oscars after recording it and saw it in an hour and a half, just the parts I liked. I should have known Argo would win and yet so many others were getting awards, did you see how well Life of Pi was doing? That one was not even so much on my radar, even though I really loved it.

Try cooking your carrots in range juice or just roast them when you have a rost dinner whole with skins on they are a different animal lol

Hello my dearest friend Andrea! I want to share something to you about veggies but, I need to prove it first myself before I recommend ;). I thought of the bitter gourd which I oftentimes eat raw (with soy sauce and thin sliced onion). It tastes so good. I'm thinking how to make it tastes good also when in shake. I'll tell you as soon as I've tried ;). Have a great day and diet! love always, Leonora

good, PD. hope to see you soon. I have not even watched Oscar show yet. Joe hates it so I am waiting for him to go to sleep so I can watch my recording of it and skim thru a lot of boring junk!! I hope I do not inadvertently find out the winner before I see it for myself!!

Salads Andrea; it is the combination that makes me ecstatic. I eat mountains of the stuff, never gain a pound and my jaws go steady with all going in and nothing coming out so everyone is safe for awhile. There are ALL the green leafies plus 3 colors of peppers, celery, red onions, cukes, broccoli, cauliflower then different proteins like chick beas or or other beans, boiled egg, cottage or other cheese and of course, garlic. My bowlholds 8-10 cups of the stuff and I eat this every day at noon. I think my life would end if I couldn't have my salad. YUM! Ground up in a drink? YUK!

yes, I agree salads are better. but you would have to eat a TON of salad to get the benefits of one glass smoothie and also the dressings I like are not the advised ones!! I do eat salads though when I can!!
Date: 2/24/2013 10:03:00 AM
or ice cubes orange juice , half a banana, a scoop of protein powder, tastes like a creamsicle. Anyway easy enough to throw a broccoli crown or a couple spinach leaves in any smoothie if you are not a salad eater

Do you know how much spinach leaves consists in ONE lousy serving. Oh my gosh, it's like three to six cups. I couldn't believe it.
Date: 2/24/2013 10:00:00 AM
Andrea, I have started my mornings with protein shakes for about 9 months now, I feel better and oh Lord, I sleep better. I usually use one banana ( sometimes half of one, a few berries ( strawberries, raspberries etc) and 4 icecubes, a bit of almond or soy milk a bit of water and of course one big scoop of protein powder. no veggies, I eat salads later in the day. The protein powder is the magic ingredient

francine, I too prefer this much more. I have made those that you describe in the past. but they say we are very sadly lacking in this country for vegetables and that's why I wanted to reap some benefits by doing more veggies. Maybe I can alternate days of my soy milk/fruit protein with the veggie smoothies.
Date: 2/24/2013 9:28:00 AM
I've never tried juicing veggies...though it's become the rage now a days. Excellent way to get in good nutrients if you can stomach it, I guess. Good luck...let us know if you find one you really like.

If I can stomach it. hahaha. You are a woman after my own heart, Debra.
Date: 2/24/2013 9:19:00 AM
Spinach usually doesn't have much of a taste in smoothies (just blend VERY well). I would also add some berries along with the pineapple, like blueberries or strawberries. Sometimes it's even good with a tablespoon of nut butter. AND I have found that a bit of avocado makes a smoothie super creamy, and it's so good for you too. Good luck! :) I also think you are right about the Oscars. I'm thinking Argo and Lincoln will be big winners. I'm mostly looking forward to seeing all the dresses. I'm such a girl haha.
