Charles, I agree wholeheartedly with your comment that we should each decide what we like about haiku and go there. i do not ever try to criticize or change another's haiku because of this. The definition has become almost personal.

No, i wasn't talking about deliberately taking haiku in any particular direction. I could have worded the statement better. Every time someone writes a haiku it redefines the poem to an nth degree. Granted that poem will have very little impact on the total but none the less an impact. I should not try to force others into the "right" direction, I should just step back and reexamine myself to see if I am writing what I really want haiku to be. That I am not just emulating what I see others do. Michael Dylan Welch is a young successful translator/writer of japanese poetry. His opinion/definition of haiku on Graceguts includes a statement about misusing "inference" rather than using concrete sensory perception. He says the result of subjective inference is a weakened haiku because the reader can make the poem mean what they want it to be from the inference. We should all really try to decide what we like in haiku and try to go there. Change will happen on its on.

CHARLES: Will stop by your blog soon. I will be posting some new haiku poets who have won national haiku awards (one judged by your mentor/friend, actually) and I think the haiku I'll be posting will make your eyebrows lift... looking forward to slowly reading your blog (lol. the next person who says my blogs are long, I'll point in your direction ;-) Happy Sunday to you, Cyndi

Hi CHARLES: Sorry for the slow reply! I have been family-busy this entire weekend while fighting a cold/flu bug. Thank you for your kind reply. I agree, discussion is a good thing and leads to exploration/questioning which in turn opens the door for growth. I think it would be so sad if haiku felt it must abandon its original roots in order to branch out in a new direction, and I hope that is not what you meant by, "the way the form should progress." In our town, we still have blacksmiths, real blacksmiths, who work over an open flame, hammer with old tools the old way. Does change necessarily mean the complete abandon of what we should respect and hold dear? I do not think so. I respect those, like yourself, who are seeking to master an old craft, who HONOUR its origins and intents. I only question the new forms and how they should be permitted to branch out. Am I optimistic? A foolish romantic? Yes. It is possible for old and new to COEXIST with comfort, mutual admiration...Hugs

Hey all, sorry it took so long to get back to you. I've been out and about with my girl and hubby. KIM: Exactly. I DO admire those who chose to write Japanese haiku. It is lovely and layered. JOANN: thank you! I'll write down that name. Must go again and will try to write more after my girl is asleep. I literally just had 3 mins. LOL. Momhood! Love it! xox Cyndi

Thank you for the blog Cyndi. It is always good to get good haiku comment. I do think I see two parts in the mentioned haiku. Some at the comma and a couple at the implied comma, but that is just my personal opinion and may not be accurate, as I am still learning. Through our heightened awareness of haiku by disscussing on the blogs, perhaps the level of quality of haiku here on the soup can be raised a notch or two. I know I have written some pretty poor ones at times but realize there are many poets not even up to that level. Those are the only ones I feel comfortable trying to help get started. All must realize that there is so much differing opinion of which way the form should progress, they have to do their own soul searching about whether or not they are following good practice. All we can do is emmulate the successful poets of the genra in which we are interested and take all advice with a grain of suspicion, and make sure we are comfortable in our own little niche.

I have his Haiku 1-4 series of the Japanese masters. I also enjoy the haiku of Richard Wright, written in the year before his death. Great works, these two very different authors.

Thank you for the info, Cyndi. Every time I start to write a haiku, I question if I'm doing it right. I like knowing I can be more flexible. After all, isn't doing things your own way what we call "poetic license"? I believe each poet should write what they feel comfortable with. If you prefer strict Japanese haiku guidelines than that's how you should write them. If you prefer more modern English style haiku, than write those. To each his own. Agree to disagree. Okay, I'm out of cliches. LOL Good blog, Cyndi Love, KIm

I'll check out the recipe! Thanks, chum. You don't need to like contemporary haiku. No reader needs to like anything. But many do and many are getting these haiku published. Like 'em or leave 'em, but for the love of mike let's not diss 'em! And yes, there is irony here, cause I am not acting like the damned fish when I should be. I am definitely fighting the current, definitely flapping around for no reason. Hacket was admiring natures ability to just let go, give in, accept. Yeah, I do like it :-) REALLY. And some of the haiku I read that follows traditional outlines is so absurd that it is like that joke: refridgerator. No aha. No beauty. No finesse. Only adhesion to format. Dull as dishwater. But then, I do say, to each his own. Yes, your comment was polite, open and not in any way sly, caustic or uppity either. Just a meeting of minds, which is cool. Hugs, Cyndi

Ok....Through your examples you're saying that we can write haiku using a run on sentence and without juxtaposition... Now...Do you really like these examples? The second one...it's just one sentence describing a huge and motionless fish facing the current... Am I missing something? : ) Twist? Emotion? Contradiction? Irony? Me dont like Contemporary haiku. I hope that this is a polite comment! : ) How's your cold? I sent you my Lemon Tea recipe (see the comment in my blog). Have a nice night.
