Ainsley Mccarthy Poem
Alone
I walk through the hallways, completely barren of familiarity.
I’ve been here before and yet I feel lost.
I’ve seen their faces and yet they are strangers.
I keep hearing my name in places it’s not being said
and as I turn around hoping for faces of recognition
all I am faced with is the relentless laughter of those who think I am crazy.
But of course the laughter is not real.
It only plays in my ears.
No one notices the insanity behind my empty gaze.
The crazed mind underneath the hollow laughter.
The torture beneath the fabricated smile.
The face in the mirror keeps looking at me as I turn away
and I feel my own eyes bore holes in the back of my head.
They’re all whispering.
They’re all staring.
I can feel their eyes on me.
shut up... shut up... SHUT UP
I scream as the whispered voices around me increase in volume.
I look up expecting staring faces
but the screaming was only in my head
and there is nothing.
No one is talking to me.
No one is whispering.
I am alone.
