A Gentle Prod
When athletics have no consequence,
The long jump and high jump make no sense,
You can still leap ten feet,
Even hurdle a street,
If you lean on an electric fence....

Swimmingly
Hey, diddle, diddle,
what’s that in the middle?
A girl doesn't have
something there.
The only retort
to this travesty, sport:
testosterone levels
are "fair"!

Summer My Season
summer my season of choice
because of baseball season
play ball that’s my only voice
that’s not the only reason
maybe a few picnics
after a few more swims
and some more athletics
outside instead of gyms
I was born in the summer
and loved summer as a kid
up north winter’s a bummer
summer no ice to skid
sunshine and crime comes with it
beaches and travels come too
but in the bleachers I’ll sit
as long as it’s not the zoo...

My Four Year Old Son Is Sad He Can'T Do the Pole Vault
Olympic stuff ain’t easy
I’ve false started many times
At the traffic lights
At meal times
Conversations in the office lounge area
And other events I’d rather not mention
Alright go on then
Let me fill you in
At McDonald’s
At the flipping birds
At peristerophobia
At the park
Pole vaulting is not a dangerous sport
But the internet has told me
Even though a pole requires
A hefty investment
It is necessary...

Stephen Miller
Stephen has won gold at three sequential Paralympics,
In his event, the club, which you throw with everything,
In Atlanta 1996, in Sydney 2000, then in Athens picks,
And then in 2008 in Beijing he won silver for his fling.
In the 2012 Paras he was captain of the men’s athletics,
Then in 2016 he became an MBE for services to sport,
He lives in Carrington Northumberland where he did affix,
The Freedom of Carrington on 7th February 2014, fort....

Olympics
Everyone around the world is gathered
at the arena as a sports person,
and an audience;
boxing, swimming, fencing, athletics,
weightlifting, soccer.....all the games
are present for enjoyment,
and for the audience to behold.
Flags of different colors and designs
dance in the wind, as the Olympic
torch burns day and night,
to keep the Spirit of Olympics
alive.
Every participant is ready to shine
for his country;
to shine for his name;
to shine for glory!...

Late In Life
Here’s to those who, late in life,
Might cultivate a skill,
A goal which, years ago, they never
Thought they could fulfill.
It might be blowing glass
Or playing chess or learning French
Or any of a hundred other
Thirsts that time can quench.
For those no longer shackled to
The workaday routine
Have the luxury of tapping
Some yet undetected gene.
And no matter if it’s music
Or athletics or the arts,
There is no age too old for what
Enlightenment imparts....

Command Performance
Blessed with exquisite company,
Education of the finest.
Houses and apartments,
Where you live.
Fashions varied through the years,
Dance socially enhancing.
Music divine to hear,
Athletics a breath of fresh air.
Foods prepared by the gods,
Marriage a complexity worth experiencing.
Man my favorite companion,
Woman my good friend.
Church an honorable companion to parents and children,
God always there, forever caring.

Winners' Speeches
When Oscar winners make a speech,
They often thank their mothers,
As well as castmates, agents
And a host of many others.
It’s good to know the sacrifice
Of moms, and their support,
In words of winners on the stage
Don’t often come up short.
I’ve noticed on some other shows,
When claiming an award
For music or athletics,
Winners’ mothers are ignored.
Instead, the first place finishers
Look up and thank their god.
I always think their moms are more
Deserving of the nod....

What Happened To the Texas Rangers
What happened to the Texas Rangers this year?
A loss in the Wild Card game, and they would disappear.
They held first place in the American League West until the last game.
To see the Oakland Athletics win the division was a shame.
The team from Texas is in the hunt for a championship no more.
They were done in by an upstart Orioles team from Baltimore.
The Rangers appeared in the World Series two years in a row.
Any appearance in the Fall Classic this year will be a no go.
