The Sea in Us

We drag our ships over shapeless rock
and sleep in color this night
under lips of blue
hemmed shut by the cold
the gutting silence
rising to devour
                                               - the sea in us
Pulsing fifty-and-one
spits in shades of red
somewhere under there
that visceral piston
the hiss and pull of coral
bending rage into the gaping jaw
beautiful madness surrendered
                                               - in us the sea
In essence more Spirit than Holy
sweet agony unmistakable
implicit design
dissolving into bottomless mire
violence trembles the surf after dark
pulling death through fragrant memory
                                               - the sea in us
And too quick this far we came
only to part so soon to ruin
into slender pools
an edifice of stars our god
love locked pin click cold
and no moon for a key
to release
                                               - in us the sea
